Dragons are very popular fantasy creatures in fandom as in original fiction.
They may be imagined as sentient with human-like minds, or as animals. Sometimes they have or are able to take human appearance. They are frequently chosen for animal-human bonds in stories with special animal companions. They are also a fairly common choice for animal transformation fic, even in fandoms that do not have canonical dragons.
