"*A note about Honorable Mentions*From what I hear, this is only the second year honorable mentions are given. They are NOT meaningless! The criteria for honorable mentions was that it was close enough to the top finishers to warrant acknowledgment. Some of them may have been only one vote away from winning third place! The number of honorable mentions in each category is different because they were determined using natural breaks." [1]

Some of the categories below had a "**" after them. This represented a "sponsored category." The sponsors were fan communities, websites, and/or mailing lists that catered to a very specific kind of fic. This represents a change from when X-Files fanfic was pretty much centralized in one place. This was the second year sponsored categories were eligible.
