Before T'challa's coronation, M'baku, head of the Jabari, an isolationist Wakandan tribe, challenged him to single combat for the right to be king and Black Panther. Although M'baku had the upper hand, T'challa won and spared M'baku's life.
When T'challa, some hours to days later, was found unconscious and near death in Jabari territory, M'baku kept him in a (possibly induced) coma, packed into snow, to keep him alive. He used the justification that T'challa has saved his life, so it was fair and just to save his in turn.
Initially refusing T'challa military aid in his fight to reclaim his rightful throne (which had been taken over in his absence), he nevertheless turned up during the battle with vital reinforcements, thus saving him again.
