Guardians of the Galaxy - We are groot by maXKennedy (2014)

Rocket/Groot is the rarepair ship between Rocket Raccoon and Groot in the Guardians of the Galaxy fandom.

Fandom

Rocket/Groot was a strong early fandom ship. In September 2014, 49 works were tagged Groot/Rocket, 41 were tagged Gamora/Peter, 30 were tagged Groot & Rocket, 28 were tagged Peter/Rocket, and all other ships had ten fics or less tagged.[1] However, since then, Rocket/Groot has only seen modest growth, with 171 tagged works in January 2019 (or 3% of the "Guardians of the Galaxy (Movies)" tag overall).[2]

Fannish Tropes

  • Pre-Canon: it is popular to explore Rocket and Groot's relationship before the events of GOTG, such as how they met, began to work together, and formed their partnership.

Other

In a now deleted tweet on Feb 28th, 2018, Guardians of the Galaxy 1 & 2 director James Gunn revealed that "Baby Groot" is Groot's son, not a de-aged version of the older Groot from the first movie as many had presumed, and that older Groot had indeed died.[3] In another (spoilery) tweet, Gunn revealed that Young Groot's last line in Avengers: Infinity War was calling Rocket "dad".[4]

Either because of TPTB reveals or authors coming to similar conclusions, multiple fic have portrayed Rocket as Young Groot's father-figure, with Original Groot as his partner:
