TommyInnit is a Twitch streamer and Minecraft YouTuber. He is one of the youngest content creators of the MCYT fandom, having started at age 15 and having turned 17 on Apr 9, 2021. TommyInnit makes comedy and Minecraft content, and used to frequently play with other content creators such as Wilbur Soot, Slimecicle, Ph1Lza, and Quackity, as well as participating in Dream's Dream SMP. Though, of all the creators Tubbo_, who is of a similar age, is considered his best friend. He also created the Origins SMP.

He had a small following in 2019 when he mainly focused on Minecraft Hypixel content, and then in Aug 2019 (around 500,000 subs) was invited to SMP Earth where he met several larger creators, including Wilbur Soot and Technoblade. From there he would continue to grow, and in July 2021 finally hit 10 million subscribers on YouTube. As of Aug 2021 this surpasses many of the MCYTers who are older and came before him, such as Slimecicle (2 million subs), Technoblade (8 million subs), and Ph1lza (5 million subs). He is mainly surpassed by Dream, who has 24 million subs, with GeorgeNotFound coming close at 9 million subs.

Fans of TommyInnit are called inniters.

Relationship with Fandom

TommyInnit is highly interactive with his fans, frequently including them in videos. He often hosts gimmick streams in which, pulling fans one at a time at random from a Discord voice call, fans may ask him one question or one request. He is also quite interactive with fans on Twitter.

He has not stated much on shipping, but has said that he doesn't believe fans should ship him with his friend Tubbo_.[1]

Controversies

When he turned 17, Tommy commented on content creator KSI's Tweet asking for a "shoutout" for his birthday. It turned out that on that day a rapper named DMX had passed away, and having not read KSI's Tweet in full, Tommy had inadvertently asked for a shoutout on a Tweet about someone's death. Later, Tommy deleted the Tweet and apologized for not understanding KSI's original Tweet.

The largest controversy surrounding TommyInnit spurred the Twitter tag "TommyNeg" in Jun 2021. After a video containing comments from creator Jschlatt was posted, Tommy made a Tweet joking about it. He said "They included a few Jschaltt moments in this video. do they not know of his wrongdoings? do they not know?! I'm not happy Dream." The Tweet was in reference to how, in fandom, it's common to dislike or cancel content creators for things they'd said and done, even if aforementioned things were from several years ago. As Jschlatt had recently come under fire for old comments, Tommy was making a joke in reference to that.

Thus, the Tweet spawned the tag "TommyNeg," short for TommyInnit Negative. TommyNeg seems to be a tag similar to "crit" or "anti" tags, with posts that are speaking negatively about TommyInnit being tagged as TommyNeg. This meant a large wave of negative comments, rude comments, or otherwise criticism began being post on Twitter about TommyInnit.[2] According to Tumblr user riptidehallucinated, the tag caused such stress on Tommy that he nearly cried during a stream while admitting he had been recently admitted to therapy due to how the negative comments affected him. A portion of the comment is below.

Why are a lot of people I see on the “Tommy Neg” stuff shitting on Tommy over 20? Like you’re a grown ass adult dehumanizing a literal 17 year old who was on the verge of an anxiety attack in front of hundreds of thousands of people. LITERALLY 100 THOUSAND PPL WERE WATCHING THIS FUCKING KID ON THE VERGE OF TEARS WHILE VENTING AND TALKING ABOUT THERAPY AND HOW TWITTER HAS MADE SUCH A NEGATIVE EFFECT ON HIS MENTAL HEALTH AND THEN HIS NAME WITH THE WORD NEGATIVE GETS TRENDING ON TWITTER AND IT’S FULL OF PEOPLE OVERANALYZING HIS WORDS AND BLOWING THEM OUT OF PROPORTION. IMAGINE DEALING WITH THAT AT THAT AGE?

riptidehallucinated, Jun 13 2021.[3]

While some of the criticisms within the TommyNeg tag are quite tame, such as criticizing Tommy for his jokes about women,[4] other criticisms may be seen as highly exaggerated, untrue, or unfounded. For example, one Twitter user calling TommyInnit a "privileged white boy" for griefing a flag in in the Dream SMP,[5] and another person saying "if you stan tommy you're condoning homophobia."[6]

A few other comments from the tag, both on Twitter and on Tumblr, are below. Tumblr comments are quite long, and edited for brevity.

+ the problem with TommyInnit is that he’s so open about the Jschlatt “twitter won’t like this one” joke. No one is trying to “cancel” Tommy because cancel culture simply doesn’t exist. Tommy is a great person and makes great content, he just needs to learn from his mistakes and monitor what he says. If you can’t read through this and make some sense of it, you are the problem. Thank you.

// tommy neg (?) i feel like tommy’s jokes have gone from “i love women because they are cool and awesome and i hate men” to “i love women because boobs and underwear” and it’s a bit,,,,,

(me talking abt Tommy situation directed at twitter as a poc southeast asian in poverty. I'm not part of the minorities he hurted so scrolls or block if you don't want to read me please)

let me put my foot down first that I agreed with holding CC accountable. calling out mistakes is a must. and babying them gonna lead to ignorant but there's a limit to how far you can go. what's happened was mob bullying and I don't know if twitter can see it or not.

I've seen "we just want to educated tommy it's the bare minimum why is he not listening" when he goes and said that he's not for activism/politics and "tommy's privileged he doesn't get to say he's taking a break when we can't"

[snipped for brevity]

If you’re at your end of the rope, then it’s better to move on by blocking instead of ‘fixing’ him for both your welled-beings.

It’s parasocial, bad and you can’t control who or what he associated with in the end.

Let me also mention the “I’m on thin fucking ice” and “he deserved it” tweets too like aw man I doubt he typed that with “ah yes I’m going to stomp them to the ground” intents and not just a repeated ignorant joke again.

Why do some of you view him in either black or white when time and time again Tommy proved he is stupid but never meant to be an asshole. At what point does the end justified tearing a dude into almost having a panic attack live and decide to trended neg the 2nd time.

If you think you’re in the right to hurt other people while also being part of minorities, you’re cruel.

Honestly I lost any type of faith for Twitter the moment I saw half of the platform readily excuse the actions of Scott Cawthon, a grown ass man who almost proudly admitted that he was a Trump supporter and happily donated money to harmful campaigns that targeted minorities, all because “he made my childhood 🥺” and “he’s allowed to have his own opinion”.

Then do a complete 180 and mentally drain 17 year old TommyInnit to the point where he felt the need to leave the platform and seek out a therapist because he was having trouble trying to properly explain the stress of having millions of people dogpiling on him for a mistake that he was obviously guilty over.

The fact that Twitter really had the tag #I Stand By Scott Cawthon alongside #Tommyneg is just embarrassing. I’m so ashamed that users showed more sympathy to a grown man who actively new that he’s harming people vs a minor who was willing to change his views for his fans. It’s pathetic honestly, literally fuck Twitter.

Fandom

In fanworks, TommyInnit is depicted with his curly blonde hair, blue eyes, and most often in his red and white T-shirt. He may also be depicted in other shirts he's worn, or the L'Manburg uniform. Though in real life he has a cleft chin, fans typically draw him with a round smooth face. Fanworks showing he and Dream's "Disc War," in which he fights Dream over possession of his music disks, is a frequent occurrence. Other content creators and fans sometimes affectionally call him "the child," or tease him for his age, though Tubbo_ does not receive the same teasing.

Though Dream is usually the most discussed creator of the MCYT fandom due to his many controversies and millions of fans, the MCYT tag on Tumblr sorted by popular is heavy in TommyInnit (and other younger MCYTers, like Tubbo_ and Ranboo), meaning TommyInnit may be a fan favorite at least among artists on Tumblr.

In MCYT fandom, there are tags that refer to creator groupings, many of which involve TommyInnit. The most prolific that involves him is Sleep Bois Inc, or SBI, a group consisting of TommyInnit, Wilbur Soot, Technoblade, and Ph1Lza. Others are Crime Boys, for TommyInnit and Wilbur Soot, Clingy Duo, for TommyInnit and Tubbo_, and then Bench Trio, for TommyInnit, Tubbo_, and Ranboo. These groupings are all SFW titles, showing friendships or, when based on their characters rather than actual persons, familial relationships.

On AO3 Superheroes (or supervillains) AUs have become a popular trope among fanworks centered around Tommy and SBI, possibly originally inspired due to his roleplay on the Origins SMP although very few of the stories actually carry the server tag.

Though TommyInnit was a minor upon gaining a following and disapproves of being shipped, particularly with his friend Tubbo_, there are still some fanfictions on Archive of Our Own that are TommyInnit/Tubbo, including some explicit works.[11] This ship name is TubboInnit, which also doubles as their platonic ship name.
