As the character has no line in the movie X-Men: First Class, several fans developed the headcanon that the character is deaf and using ASL.
While he is an unrepentant villain in the comics and doesn't show much remorse in the movie, he is often a much more sympathetic figure in fanworks. It is probably due to the end of the movie in which he joins Magneto and Mystique team. As the fans don't want to make these characters fully villains, their teammates also become closer to grey characters.
In AU, Riptide is even often a hero as one of Magneto's best friends.
His actions in X-Men: First Class are then justified by having Janos trapped in the Hellfire team, unsure how to leave etc.
