General Reactions and Reviews

The workhorse of Sen fanzines. The writers are a diverse group. Mysti has no problem with tossing disturbing fics at the reader. She delights in publishing in silly stories, hurt/comfort wallows, romances, and primal sentinel sex. They're the fanzines that I started with, and I still have a soft spot for them. [1]

Come to Your Senses #1-5, a series of collections of Jim/Blair stories. Most of the first five contain novellas. These zines really got me hooked on 'Sentinel' fandom. [2]

Issue 1

cover of issue #1, TACS

Come to Your Senses 1 was published in May 1997 and is 177 pages long with a cover by TACS and interior art by MegaRed.

From the editor:

Welcome to the first issue! Here you'll find some wonderful stones and ideas that will keep you spellbound, make you laugh, make you cry, but most of all, make you think. And perhaps write a story of your own?

This zine was a pleasure to put together, and not just because I love this fandom so much. Well, then again, maybe it is. If it weren't for the great fen on Senad who gave my alter ego a safe place to play, Editor would have probably killed me and taken over my body. (Who would have noticed, right?) But, Editor wants to insert here, when she kills a character, by Goddess, that character is staying dead!

Herein you'll find, at the end of several stories, some small extracts that are known as drabbles. A drabble can only run 100 words, no more, no less (count one and see!), and the author tries to capture a mood or feeling or strong emotion within those 100 words. I think Sherry has done an excellent job with these. That's who wrote all these drabbles, by the way. Sherry Zoeller. I mention this because I didn't realize until I had printed up the zine for the last time that I had neglected to put her name on any of her work. Ulp! Mea culpa. Sorry about that, Sherry. But, hey! It got you mentioned in the editorial!

The second issue of this zine is debuting for Mountain Media Con in July, 1997, so all you authors out there, send me a story! Let's make Come to Your Senses a tradition for years to come!

Now, I'm going back to finish up the other 10 zines I'm doing for MediaWest. You go read now. But always remember, stones are like elevators...

Reactions and Review: Issue 1

The stories in Come to Your Senses 1 and 2 were all so good... I think the one which moved me the most was" Guardian Angel" (-by MegaRed-). I read that at class and I started crying. I got some weird looks and one girl asked if I was okay. Told her I was and let her read it... she was a little choked up. She said that slash wasn't her cup or tea, but she was impressed with the story. I said that I would get her some gen stories to read...So, to all the authors out there, keep up the good work and write more. I'm starving! [3]

Issue 2

cover of issue #2, TACS, nominated for a STIFfie; a variation of this art is used in The Jungle Book

Come to Your Senses 2 was published in July 1997 and is 168 pages long. The cover is by TACS. It contains no interior art.

Reactions and Review: Issue 2

I can not tell you how excited I was to find my copy of Come to Your Senses 2 in my mail. This is only my third story in print, and I have not gotten used to that sensation of seeing my name and something that I wrote in a zine. I'm a published author! It still is, and I suspect always will be, a thrill for me. After carefully removing the zine from the mailer (apparently the tape is the strongest part or maybe I was excited), I was instantly mesmerized by TAGS' beautiful cover of Jim and Blair in the shower. Just lovely. After checking the table of contents, I immediately turned to...my story, "In Harm's Way." I know, I know. But it was my story in print. You've just got to understand my mind set. Sending your story off is like sending out a child to the cold cruel world. You just have to look them over as soon as they are returned to you. Were they shoeless, traumatized, or have they dyed their hair pink and will now only answer to some name you never heard before? You just don't know the worry. But there it was, safe and sound. I was impressed with the time you dedicated to my story by setting the different fonts for use when different people were writing. It made the voices of each character stand out. I appreciate that you saw the value of typesetting the story that way.

"In Harm's Way" was a difficult story for me to write, and I want to thank you for taking a chance on a story that was such a change for me. I loved the way it looked. Thank you for taking good care of my child. [4]

Just finished reading Come to Your Senses 2 and I'm dropping you an LoC. First, I loved the cover. I'm beginning to think that TAGS should be appointed the official Sentinel artist, or something.

I really liked everything in the zine. Probably my favorite pieces were the longer fiction. Not that I don't like shorter pieces—it's just that I prefer it when an author has some time to develop the relationship. Yvonne McCool's "In Harm's Way" very nicely handled what if Blair were permanently handicapped by something that Jim did or didn't do.

I also loved R'rain's "For whom the Bell Tolls"—the wedding day nerves, hot honeymoon sex, and relationship building pushed all the right buttons for me.

"A Positive Sign" by Gillian Middleton was also lovely and I thought she handled Jim's breakdown very nicely.

The courtship dance in Dean Warner's "Piercing Blue" was great. And I really liked the way the Lash incident was integrated.

Katrina Bowen did a nice outing story in "Some you Win." Her Blair obfuscation about the kickboxing English majors was a hoot. Kudos to Siren and Noel Goddard as well.

Nice job, everyone. [5]

Come to Your Senses 2: Okay, the first thing I noticed is how beautifully the zines are put together, with a wonderfully readable font and very professional layout. The running panthers at the bottom of the page are a great touch. And of course I just can't say enough about TACS marvelous artwork. The perfect accompaniment to great zines. Having helped assemble zines myself has given me a keen appreciation of the work involved and all I can say is, 'Well done, Whatever You Do, Don't Press!'

"A Fine Romance" by Terence—An adorable first time story, beautifully constructed as it switches POV from Jim to Blair. This worked perfectly and the characters are wonderfully accurate.

"For Whom The Bell Tolls" by R'rain—A story I enjoyed so much it had me longing for more! Sexy and warm, it painted a lovely wedding picture coloured with the bitter sweet reality awaiting the happy couple in the real world. I would love to read more in this universe.

"Piercing Blue" by Dean Warner—Great title for a great story with a very sensual final scene. Jim at his warmest and most relaxed, Blair nicely confused and complex, just the way I like him. One wonders how much research went into that piercing scene, and what form it took! By the way, I'd love to read Dean's take on Blair getting that tattoo!

"In The Name Of Love" by Jen Riddler—This story had me transfixed from the first paragraph. I love the concept of Jim being gay; it fits nicely with my own observations of him with women in the show. There are some brilliant ideas and scenes in this story. My only problem was that I wanted more. After all the guys suffered, I would have liked to see them back together again so I could wallow in it for a while. Nice use of the Quickiemart, by the way, Apu would be proud. <g>

"Plain ol Vanilla" by BCW—Nothing plain about this one! Sexy and kinky with a cherry on top. I haven't seen much by this author, but she has a nice touch with both the characters and the sexy scenes.

"A Positive Sign" by me—so I can't comment too much except to say it's wonderful what a good editor can do! Thanks, Mysti!

"Leading By Example" by Noel Goddard—I found this a simply wonderful, thoughtful story. I love the idea of the guys being 'out' and a part of gay life. I'd love to read a sequel to this.

"Some You Win" by Katrina Bowen—One of my favourite authors and, as usual, she didn't disappoint! Great story with some terrific new characters, and I really enjoyed the opening scene from Farnese's point of view. Poor old Blair, a hostage again. I love how he's gonna wait 'til after it happens again before giving up on Cascade PD.

"Moving On" by Siren—Yay! An 'I hate Sam' story. Or at least a 'Blair dumps Sam' story. Lovely first time tale filling in some episode blanks nicely.

"In Harm's Way" by Yvonne S. McCool—Yvonne at her very best! Tough and angsty, plenty of plot and drama, hurt/comfort and a wonderful wrap-up. Lovely long story to really get my teeth into, the perfect end to a simply wonderful zine![6]

I liked " In Harm's Way." I loved the way Jim struggled with Blair's handicap. My younger sister knows sign and is also 20% deaf in her left ear. So I know the frustration both go through. [7]

Issue 3

cover of issue #3, TACS

Come to Your Senses 3 was published in July 1997 and is 175 pages long. The cover is by TACS.

[zine]: Just a note to let you know how much I enjoyed Come to Your Senses 3. As a "new" slashfic writer. It was very cool seeing something that I wrote published somewhere, as I've never had anything published before. Once I overcame the initial giddiness of seeing my name in print, I read the other stories in the zine, and was impressed. This was also the first fanzine I'd ever seen and the quality of the writing was excellent All the stories were well-written and enjoyable, I loved it! As with any collection of stories, one or two usually stand out, and for me the two that I really enjoyed were R'rain's "Father's Day" and Candy Apple's 'To Have and to Hold." And, of course, TACS cover art was beautiful. On the more technical side, the layout was nice and it was easy to read, which is so very important in any sort of publication. Again, I thoroughly enjoyed the zine and look forward to getting more of them in the future. Thank you. [8]

[zine]:

I think the one which moved me the most was "Guardian Angel" (-by MegaRed-). I read that at class and I started crying. I

got some weird looks and one girl asked if I was okay. Told her I was and let her read it while I was in the darkroom. When I came out, she was a little choked up. She said that slash wasn't her cup of tea, but she was impressed with the story. I said that I would get her some gen stories to read.[9]

[zine]:

"Chain Reaction" by J. Griffin—Don't do that! J. Griffin had me really spooked there! First I thought Blair was gonna die, then that he was gonna be a vampire. She had me hooked on a pretty spell-binding story. I really enjoyed the ride.

"Father's Day" by R'rain—Tantalizing glimpse into Jim's past here and I really loved the way R'rain dealt with the whole subject. Great story!

"Crash" by Terence—Really marvelous and very original storyline. I was thrilled to see a sequel to 'A Fine Romance' (-In CTYS1-). Again, the POVs worked brilliantly and Simon was a welcome addition.

"To Have and To Hold" by Candy Apple—Wonderful, wonderful story! Magic! Sad and poignant, I was delighted by the twists and turns it took. Blair as a virgin? Yes, Candy had me believing it and loving the idea. What a sweetie Jim was in this story. He did everything right and I don't blame Blair a bit for falling for him. Happy endings help, and this was a beauty!

"Possession" by Stacey LA Stronach—You can't lose when you start with one of my favourite songs in the world! Lovely first time story with some sweet lovin' thrown in.

"Reunion" by Legion—An intriguing story posing some interesting new ideas about Jim's senses and what might happen if he lost them. A great read, absolutely demanding a follow-up.

"Undertow" by K. Ann Yost—An enjoyable story where Blair gets to be hero! Good to see, the little guy doesn't get nearly as much credit as he deserves. Great action scenes by the way.

"A Fine Mix of Heaven and Hell" by Kim Gasper—A gorgeous first time saga, building with marvelous tension towards some truly beautiful love scenes between the guys. The characters are perfectly drawn and very believable, which is half the battle in a slash story. Excellent end to a excellent zine![10]

[zine]:

I think my favorite pieces in Come to Your Senses 3 were Kim Gasper's "A Fine Mix of Heaven and Hell," Candy Apple's "To Have and to Hold" and Gillian Middleton's "Control." They are all very different beginnings to the Blair/Jim relationship, but they all really worked for me. I liked the Heaven and Hell analogy Kim uses in her story.

And as for "Control," a one phrase description could be defrosting hurts.

In "To have and to Hold," I really liked Candy having Jim help get Blair back on his feet before he tells him how he feels about the kid.

Gillian must have been really busy recently to have three stories in this zine. Having Jim save the girl 24 hours in advance was very interesting in "In case of Emergency." Is this a one-time cosmic event, or is Gillian going to explore the 6th sense part of this?

"Father's Day" was very emotional with Jim mourning the child that never was and Blair missing the father he never had. Disturbing, but hopeful.

"Reunions" was a very rocky beginning for the relationship, but I'd like to see Legion continue this. I want to know what happens next. (-Legion says she is working on a sequel called "Renewal," which we should receive sometime before the end of the century. <grin>-) I thought "Chemical Reaction" was extremely interesting, but unless I'm mistaken, the dagger wound pulled a Dr. Watson—starting on the chest and then suddenly switching to the arm. A little disconcerting. (-And shameful that both the author and I missed it!-) I know-pick, pick, pick. I've been known to have continuity errors in my fiction as well. Recently, I had a friend point out that the story started at the breakfast table and four pages and two sex scenes later had the two characters going to bed for the night (her comment was that it must've been the longest two sex acts on record). [11]

Issue 4

cover of issue #4, TACS

Come to Your Senses 4 was published in October 1997 and contains 181 pages. The cover is by TACS.

The disclaimer for this issue:

ome to Your Senses 4 is a publication of Whatever You Do, Don't Press! and does not intend to infringe upon the copyrights or holdings of Danny Bilson, Paul DeMeo, Pet Fly Productions, Paramount, time (whether it matters or not), sights, sightseeing, sore eyes, well eyes, mediocre eyes, stalking, tail-waggling, pouncing, shredding, eating, unions (perfect or otherwise, formed or otherwise~"parts is parts"), guide envy, pianist envy {Moonlighting, anyone?), anyone whose initials happen to be N.V., blackmailing, bluemailing, any-of-the-primary-colours-mailing (parcel post only!), action, inaction, shadows, sunlight, wars, police actions, really pouty kids who won't talk to each other, the very first time, the very last time, any time in between, does anybody really know what time it is?, identities (mistaken or not; stolen or not; poor Tom Vale), penance, contrition, absolution, a few 'Hail, Mary's and any killing of the fatted calf (that's right out!). No bribes of any kind were offered, and I want someone to get my agent on the phone! Dammit. Laugh! Cry! Send LoCs!

The editorial:

Well, here we are, with the fourth issue out already! That's four in only six months! Wow. And it seems to be falling into a pattern; I ask for submissions, I get flooded with lovely stories, I find I have too many for a single issue, and publish two issues simultaneously. Hey, if it works for you, it works for me! I say, let's continue this tradition for a long time!

And I'd also like to get more artists involved in Sentinel fandom. Where are all those incredibly talented people? I know TACS is fantastic, but she's only one person, folks! (Although her evil twin Skippy begs to differ.) She can only draw so fast, put out so much (Skippy says she puts out a lot—but I think that's just a rumour the evil twin started). So, let's bring in more artists to help take some pressure off. I know you folks are out there! KOZ? Mo Burns? Suzi Lovett? Karen River? Hello?

And for those of you interested in helping out this fandom in other ways, we sure could use you in the campaign to Save Our Sentinel! Just do a web search for that phrase and you'll find the wonderful web page some industrious Senners have put up. (I'd give you the URL, but I can't find it and Editor won't let me on-line to look for fear I'll find a story and start reading it, totally ignoring the other four zines I have to finish for ZCon. <sigh>) Anyway, check out the SOS web page and join in the fun! We need you!

That's it, I'm done. For now. CTYS5 is filling up fast, so send your stories in as soon as you can! (Send attached files to [email protected].)

I'll see you on the flipside! And watch out for those stone-like elevators—they fall, y'know. -- Mysti

Well, here we are, with another jam-packed, adventured-laden, lovingly crammed-full zine that's sure to have something for everyone; first times, established relationships, PWPs and wonderfully drawn out plots (yes, we actually have plots!). So, drop the kids off at mom's [13], grab your favourite beverage and settle down with CTYS8 for some nice, juicy Jim/Blair excitement. And please do let all the authors (and the publisher!) know what you think of their stories! We all live for feedback.

From the editorial:

As always, this zine has been a pleasure to put together and the chance to work with such wonderful authors has been a pure joy. You can’t say that about some zines, but I can’t help but say it here. The fandom that has grown up around The Sentinel reminds me of Starsky and Hutch in its warmth and love and do-anything-for-you attitude. It’s just a wonderful place to play. I hope you enjoy reading these stories as much as the authors and I have in presenting them to you, and if so, please send them (and me!) an e-mail saying so. It’s hard, sometimes, to send stories off to zines and not get any return on your investment, when posting something on the net can get you instant LoCs. So, again, to insure the continuance of Come to Your Senses and the other zines out there, please take a second or two to tell the authors and artists how much you like their work.

[Raonaid]
~ A damned good read! Funny stories, good POV stories, lovely angst fic... Just a well-rounded, excellent zine.

Highlights for me included 'The Little Things in Life' by Katrina Bowen (a humorous look at how Simon, Joel, Rafe, Henri and Megan view Blair and Jim), 'Rainy Days' by Geli (a fun 'first time' story), 'The Hazards of Camping' by Banshee (just beautiful and sweet!), 'Turning Point' by Rayden Star (a 'Jim-and-Blair-are-kidnapped' story that is fresh and original, and just plain WOW!), 'William Wonders' by Gena Fisher (a POV from Jim's father), and 'Headcase' by Grey (an intense and emotionally engrossing kidnap and aftermath story).

I had only one complaint with this zine, which is one I hesitate to mention. It regarded the cover of the zine. Umm, now as much as I - appreciate - the inclusion of a full frontal nude drawing of Blair, it really does make hiding your slash addiction from those you live with difficult. A picture of Blair and Jim on the zine cover, fully clothed, can be explained away as "cop show stories", and most lose interest. The cover of this zine, um, didn't really allow that. Much as I liked it, I really wish it hadn't been on the cover. :-)[16]
