Fruit Cocktail is a slash anthology. There are five issues. The last issue is titled "Fruit Cocktale."

This zine has a sister zine called Fruit-of-the-Month Club Minizine.

Descriptions from Ads

From a description in On the Double #25: "Multi-media 'slash'. Stories, poetry, artwork need to contain at least three references to fruit. It's easy folks, just use your imagination!"

A fan in 1992 recommended them for their art: "... 2-3 Suzan Lovett plates per zine!" [1]

From a description in On the Double #34: "Another collection of multi-media 'fruit stories'. Stories must contain fruit (in addition to the two-legged kind!)"

A July 1993 ad in GAZ called it "unpretentious fun."

Issue 1

cover of issue #1

Fruit Cocktail 1 was published in May 1991 and is 68 pages long. Its subtitle is, "Harry and Johnny's Fruit of the Month Club." which is a nod to the food company, "Harry and David" as well as a pun on the names Harry/Johnny and a slang term for homosexuality: fruit.

The art is by Kari Masoner, Ruth Kurz, Suzie Lovett, Todd Hamilton, and DVS.

The zine's warning:

Warning! This zine contains sexually explicit, same sex, adult-oriented material and will not be knowingly sold to anyone under the age of 18. If you suffer from a weak heart, or are mortally offended by gay sex, I can suggest a nice vanilla-flavored, teen romance. If, on the other hand, you indulge yourself in the pursuit of orgiastic, licentious reading, then, baby this zine’s for you!

From the editorial by Masoner:

This zine has finally made it off the printing press, with a lot of support and encouragement from Ruth (aka SKIP). I’d like to take this time to thank Ruth and everyone else who contributed their talent to this creation and to thank them for their patience. I hope it was worth the wait and you enjoy reading the many “fruity” stories within these pages as much as I have. (Have you ever tried to type this kind of story at work and someone comes up and wants to know what you’re laughing at! Talk about heart failure!)

From the editorial by Kurz:

This zine, although inspired by a page in an H/J fun supplement, is wholly Kari’s creation. My part was to reinspire her when life interrupted her plans. Life does that. I’ve done little writing or drawing for awhile. With some variations, all of my artwork appearing here has previously been published in various past zines. My warmest thanks to all the much-appreciated friends who have contributed to make this unpretentious bit of fun into a very nice zine.

Issue 2

cover of issue #2

Fruit Cocktail 2 was published in March 1992 and is 118 pages long. It has the subtitle: A Second Helping. It was "Another multi-media, mixed bag of fruit stories."

The art is by Ruth Kurz, Suzan Lovett, Kari Masoner, DVS, KOZ, and Terri Librande.

From Masoner:

I have found that I’m missing a lot of great talent because of my “fruit” requirement, so it has been suggested that I open Fruit Cocktail to all contributors. If writer’s/artists want to include fruit in their stories/artwork, please do! But, if it really is too difficult, contribute anyway. I don’t want to miss anyone’s talent because of restrictions. However, Fruit Cocktail will always remain a multi- media ‘slash’ fandom.

From Kurz:

Here we are again, and I want to thank all our wonderful contributors for another good variety of new stories, poetry, and artwork. My own drawings, however, are oldies, and I want to thank KOZ for helping out with some last minute ones previously published in Bodacious zines. As to the fruit,

I think it’s fun to see the unique ways writers have of using it in the story. Sometimes a single word does it. Enjoy!

[Florida Sunshine]: Why this must be read: Today’s rec is a slightly more serious/realistic story, set overseas. The use of well-developed and well-written OCs (without a Mary-Sue in sight) is what makes this fic interesting. They are used to support and kickstart the main relationship. The lads are in Florida in the line of duty and have a few days to spare. They meet an American couple, a brother and sister, and their romantic interactions with these make them rethink their own relationship. The story is rated adult for the OC part. The slash pairing is only just on the horizon when the story ends and readers are expected to exercise their imagination which is something I enjoy doing. The OC entanglements provide plenty to base that imagination on, just as they do for the lads! [2]

Issue 4

cover of issue #4

Fruit Cocktail 4 was published in May 1994 and is 92 pages long.

From the editorial:

Welcome to the last issue of Fruit Cocktail! I hope you've enjoyed reading this series as much as I've enjoyed publishing it. However, all good things come to an end at some time.

I will continue to publish zines, but I've decided to go on to other projects/fandoms, namely. Corridors, a Kung Fu: The Legend Continues zine, and Sidekicks & Swordplay, a multi-media "sword & martial arts" zine [3]. These two are non-slash.

Also in the planning stages are Synergy (Starsky & Hutch) [4], Affairs to Remember (UNCLE) [5], A Little B&D (Professionals) [6] and Cupid Leaps & Quantum Crossovers (Quantum Leap crossover) [7]. These four are slash.
