Programming

Panels

Friday, November 4 9:30 - 12:00.

  • Open Range: Find your Kindred (Slash) Spirits: Not sure where to go or who to talk to at the beginning of the con? Trying to meet up with old friends? Mix, mingle and find your slashy kin or make a new friend or two

12:00 pm.

  • Dealer's Room Opens

1:00 - 2:00 pm.

  • House, MD - general discussion (Moderator: Tracy L.). He's an arrogant, rude, sarcastic and egocentric doctor who hates to see patients. So why are we watching?
  • Rareslash (unmoderated) . You think you're the only person in your fandom and one day you meet...one other person! Rare fandoms can turn out to be hidden treasures. Come share your favorites
  • Generation Fan: Live social networks vs. lone wolves on the 'Net (Moderator: K'Kathy). Do in-person social networks still have the same impact as they once did in the age of the Internet?

2:00 - 2:30 pm

  • Brit Slash (unmoderated).

General discussion about British TV shows. What's hot across the pond?

2:30 - 3:00 pm

  • Wild Wild West (unmoderated). General discussion

2:00 - 3:00 pm

  • The Bold and The Beautiful: NCIS Slash potential (Moderators: Nix & James Walkswithwind). What's your flavor? Gibbs/DiNozzo? DiNozzo/McGee? Kate/Abby? The options go on but would any of these pairings really work? Do they need to?
  • RPS: Real Person Slash (Moderator: Hederahelix). Now that RPS seems to be settling a bit more into the mainstream(or at least to have gotten an established position as character slash's black sheep cousin who keep coming to the family reunion), what's left to bring RPSers together? What have you been reading that's good and obscure, and what do you wish would just slip into obscurity?

3:00 - 4:00 pm

  • Lost (Moderator: Tracy L.). Last season it was just the survivors from their section of the plane. Now there are at least two other groups. Where is this going?
  • Stargate SG-1: Fresh Meat (Moderator: Lady Ra). A panel that explores the new cast members and possible new slashy entanglements
  • Son of Purple Prose (Moderator: K'Kathy). Why spell cheque I snot always yore fiend. Note: be prepared to laugh.

4:00 - 4:30 pm

  • Meet the Con Com: Take a break and meet the folks who bring you BASCon year after year (oh and get some questions answered too!)

4:30 - 5:00 pm

  • Starsky and Hutch: Renew the Love (unmoderated). Two decades later, people can't get enough of this duo.

4:30 - 5:30 pm

  • Supernatural: The Ghoulies and the Ghosties. (Moderator: Debbie). Will this show survive when others have faded after half a season? What makes it work for you? Are the supernaturals believable?
  • Stargate Atlantis: Geeks = The New Sexy (Moderators: Nix & James Walkswithwind). Whether your geek of choice is Rodney, Radek, or Carson, the geeks seem to have stolen the thunder from the traditional beefcake kind of hero. Is this a new phenomenon, or have they always been lurking, ready to take over?

5:00 - 6:00 pm

  • CSI: What's the Appeal? (Moderator: K'Kathy). How do our favorite investigators get in the mood to get it on amongst all that gore? How do you as a viewer handle the graphic violence and biological mayhem of the show? Why do we watch it when it turns our stomach?

5:30 - 6:00 pm

  • Veronica Mars (Moderator: Tracy L). Another girl who talks to dead people. Was the reason we watched only to find out who killed Lily Kane?

7:00 - 9:00 pm

  • Friday Night Mixer (Tiburon/Sausalito)

9:00 - 10:00 pm

  • Battlestar Galactica 2003 (Moderator: Hederahelix). Come on, you know you want to spend some time debating the great questions of the fandom: Is Adama a Cylon? Which Adama? How does a fandom keep going when the practically canon slash of TOS gets torpedoed when one of the characters changes gender? Which slash pairings lead the fleet and which do you hope got left behind several FTL jumps ago?
  • Serenity (Moderator: TBA). You've seen the film. You have opinions. Lots of opinions.

9:00 - 11:00 pm

  • Eye of Argon (Hosted by Jane Mainlander). For the second year in a row, Jane will host a reading of "Eye of Argon" - possibly the worst sword-and-sorcery fanfic ever written. Come for the silly.

10:00 - 11:00 pm

  • NaNoWriMo for Nite Owls (hosted by Lady J & Zenia). Join us for a late night NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) writing session. Support for making your daily word count guaranteed!

10:00 - until the cows come home

  • He/He Game (hosted by JennCat). MadLibs with slash story twist!

11:00 - 12:00 pm

  • DIY (Monterey, Presidio). Open rooms

Saturday, November 5

9:00 - 10:00 am

  • Slash Archetypes: Warrior and Wizard/Scholar Mage (Moderators: Corbeau and DiDanaan). Many slash pairing fit what one might call the Arthur/Merlin archetype - a man (or woman) of action,

usually a warrior, with a partner who represents a different "way of being in the world" - arcane knowledge, intellect, spirit. How many such pairs can you think of? When do you think it does/doesn't work and why? (Monterey)

  • Sarah Bannerman: Obstacle or Enabler? (Dead Zone) (Moderators: Nix).

Is Sarah a barrier to be gotten rid of as quickly as possible or a potential matchmaker? Is she a problem for your pairing, or an asset?

  • Prison Break: Don't Pick Up the Soap! (Moderator: K'Kathy). The difference between Fox and HBO – prison rape is barely mentioned at Fox River State Penitentiary. How fast would pretty Michael have been prey?

10:00 - 11:00 am

  • Flashfic/Drabble Hour (Moderator: Zenia). The first part of the panel will be a quick writing session followed by the sharing of what we've written. Bring your muse.
  • Spies and Slash in the 60’s (Moderator: Debbie). All of our favorites-MUNCLE, I Spy, Avengers, Professionals, Mission: Impossible. If we brought them to the present what kind of missions would they be on? How would they react? What do you think about the remakes?
  • When Het Appeals to a Slasher's Heart (Moderator: Lady Ra). When does it work? Do these pairings: Aeryn Sun and John Crichton, Lois and Clark, Vincent and Catherine, Sam and Jack, John Sheppard and Teyla/Elizabeth, Clark and Lana, and others, make your heart flutter or totally squick you?

11:00 am – 12:00 pm

  • Kurdy: On A TV Show Called Jeremiah, Can He Ever Be More Than A Sidekick? (Moderator: Morgan Dawn). The show is named Jeremiah, so it must be about some guy called Jeremiah? But is that truly the case or is Jeremiah a more complex show? Join us for an exploration of Kurdy, a secondary character/sidekick who may offer more than what meets the eye.

Sentinel (unmoderated)

  • Jim and Blair are still going strong.
  • Older Fandoms and New Fans (Moderator: Karendreamer). Older fandoms such as MUNCLE, I Spy, Starsky and Hutch, are still popular and some are even available on DVD. The characters are still interesting so how do we get new writers into the fandom?

1:00 - 2:00 pm

  • Embracing Your Inner Crackfic (Moderator: Zenia). Rodney and John on a unicorn, Jim and Blair as elves, Zoë singing karaoke; let's discuss our favorite crackfics and explore some of the crazier ideas you have.
  • Your Showbiz Questions Answered (Moderator: Crystal). Crystal returns to answer whatever question you might have on how the industry works, based on her experience on a variety of genre shows and studios.
  • Smallville: Reaction as we head to DC canon (Moderator: Debbie). Clark and Lex as mortal enemies. Can anything be done within the real context of the show to bring them together again as friends? If so, what? If not, what was the breaking point?

2:00 - 3:00 pm

  • LiveJournal 101 (Moderator: Lady J). You've heard about it. Your friend has one (or maybe two). All the good fic seems to be posted there but you're not sure if you're ready to take the plunge or even want to. Find out what LiveJournal is and its place within fandom.
  • Filking with Jane (Moderator: Jane Mainlander). Jane M. returns for another year of filking fun? Don't know what filking is? Come to this panel and learn all about it from a long-time filker.
  • House: What's a Nice Oncologist like You Doing with a Grouchy Bastard Like Him? (Moderator: Mary E) House and Wilson - are they doing it? Of course they are, but why? How do they get what they need from each other and what do they want that they don't get? What's their pillow talk like? Who wants it more? How do Wilson's flirtations fit in? Or his wives? Let's get together and talk about this impossible, but inevitable, couple.

3:00 - 4:00 pm

  • Darkfic (Moderator: K'Kathy). Does your taste in slash make your fan friends cringe? Do you think of rape or torture as just a means of getting your OTP together? Come chat about the darker side of slash.
  • Geeks with a Gun (Moderator: Lady Ra) . What's the appeal? Come prepared to chat about your favorite gun-toting geek.
  • Out of this World (Moderator: Karendreamer). What are the best ways to post fic on the net? LiveJournal, personal website, themed hosting site (i.e., Area 52, The Basement, Heliopolis)? Other ideas?

4:00 - 5:00 pm

  • Stargate: SG-1 -- With the male/male kiss on Atlantis, should SG-1 follow suit? (Moderator: Crystal) . If we were to get a male/male kiss on SG-1 what is the pairing we'd want to see? Have our feelings of slash changed with the new lineup? Are our hearts still bound up in a pairing that is no longer on screen and if so, do we wish to just see that continuing.
  • What's New on the Tube? (Moderator: Debbie). We have a plethora of new shows to watch every night of the week. How do you decide what to watch? Which shows do you think will make it past the 1/2 season mark? Which will sink?

4:00-5:30

  • Girls Who Like Boys Who Like Boys: An Anthropological Overview of Slash (Moderators: Megan Haines and J. A. Nelson). A discussion panel focusing on why women choose to participate in slash, as well as the effect that participation has on their own gender identity and sexuality. Audience participation is encouraged, indeed it's hoped for, and opinions/discussion on the theories presented at the beginning is the prime objective of the panel.

5:00 - 5:30 pm

  • Medium (Moderator: Debbie). It works because of its imperfections in the characters. Why does this show work? Why doesn't it?
  • Six Feet Under (unmoderated). General discussion

5:30 - 6:00 pm

  • Numb3rs (unmoderated). General discussion
  • Your Favorite Vampires (unmoderated). General discussion

8:00 - 10:30 pm

  • BASCon Video Show - Hosted by Morgan Dawn

8:00 - 10:30 pm

  • DIY - Open rooms

10:30 -11:30 pm

  • Fresh Girls - Femmeslash (Moderator: Lady J w/lots of help). New to femmeslash? Do some of the same fannish conventions carry over from m/m or does femmeslash have its own languages and mores? Come to this panel and check it out.
  • Bedtime Stories (unmoderated). It's like a slumber party with slashy s'mores. Bring your favorite slash scenes to read out loud to the group.

Harry Potter (Moderator: TBA)

Sunday, November 6 9:30 am – 12:00 pm

  • Dead Dog. Join us as we start to bring BASCon 2005 to a close. There's a raffle and a chance to give your feedback about what you liked (and didn't like) about this year's con.

1:00 - 2:00 pm

  • Babylon 5: Pairing Smaller & Smaller (Moderator: Nix). In a series this good, sometimes the best pairings feature minor guest stars. Come and share of the fun of pairings you have to explain even to people who've seen the show.
  • Canon 'ships that Work (unmoderated). Believe it or not, there are actually some canon 'ships that work. How is that even possible? Good writing? The alignment of the stars?

2:00 - 4:00 pm

  • DIY - Open rooms

Panel Notes & Convention Reports

Vid Show

The 2005 vid show was put together by Morgan Dawn. Morgan Logan did the vid show set-up and ran the sound-mixer. Before the show, she tested each vid in order to customize the sound levels for better performance. She also designed the DVD covers.

From the post-convention progress report: "We are very excited about the show this year-it was very well received and we sold all copies of the [vid show DVD] within 30 minutes. We are producing a second run."

Lady J posted the Vid Show Specs[6] and catalenamara offered a list of her favorite vids. Because the TV and DVD player were not working during the vid review, fan artist spaggel sketched art to capture what the panel members said about each vid. She could only work on each sketch while the audience was discussing the vid. The completed artwork is below.

Charity

From Progress Report #3:

"We have had a recent change in charities this year. Previously, we had announced that the recipients of all BASCon charity monies would be Breast Cancer Action and Project Open Hand. Due to the recent hurricanes along the Gulf Coast, however, we thought it appropriate to channel our donation towards ongoing relief efforts in that area. All monies collected this year will be sent to America's Second Harvest: The Nation's Food Bank Network. 100% of our donation will go directly to hurricane relief efforts. Next year, we will return to Project Open Hand and Breast Cancer Action as our charities."
