Can I ask a question?

Hello Patchlamb!

You kindly helped me when I started posting earlier in the week. Can I ask a formatting question?

I am working on the post The Holmsies Awards and I want to use the same citation for two separate quotes. Can I use the ref name= to do that? I can’t find it mentioned in the help pages. Thanks. Alessnox (talk) 23:47, 17 February 2021 (UTC)

Yup! For regular one-time use references you use the <ref>this is a citation</ref>, but to use multiple use reference you would do <ref name=NAMEHERE>this is a citation to be used more than once</ref>. Then, any time you want to use that same ref a second or third or basically any other time, all you need to do is insert <ref name=NAMEHERE></ref> and it will direct to the same ref in the ref list. This page here (Creatures) has a few examples, ref 1 and 13 use the ref name trick. Patchlamb (talk) 23:55, 17 February 2021 (UTC)

Templates that help with Archive links

I really appreciate the archive links you added to Animated Music Video! Is there a reason you're not using the Cite Web or source templates? Particularly in the cases where you want to add the archived link as a superscript, Source saves you a bit of messing with HTML. -- Quaelegit (talk) 00:40, 28 September 2022 (UTC)

Hi Quaelegit, the Cite Web template is mostly for the references section at the bottom of the page rather than curated example lists (and honestly goes a bit over my head; we talk about it on the Furry talk page). It can be a bit unwieldy looking so it's not my preferred reference or archival format, but some editors use it. It's possible it will become less unwieldy as the wiki transitions to a visual editor. Using a superscript for lists makes it faster and shorter; the difference between the superscript and the source template is only visible in the code, where the source template includes a date in the code and the superscript doesn't. But on the outside they look the same. I use the source code for external links in articles but not on longer lists, like in example sections. Not using it is just a preference. It's less work, the code is simplified, and the only loss is the date isn't in the code (which non-editors/guest readers will likely not be viewing, anyways). Thank you for explaining! The discussion on the Furry talk page is illuminating. I agree it would be nice to make Cite web easier to use and more accessible to newbies, but I'll wait until the updates next month and see what specifically i want to discuss then (and will move it off your talk page to somewhere more relevant :P). And I see your point about the Source template -- I prefer using it over dealing w/ HTML tags, but I usually leave off the archive-date field entirely, so it's functionally identical to the latter! -- Quaelegit (talk) 05:33, 30 September 2022 (UTC)
