Ron Perlman is an actor.

Rosemarie Hauer is the artist, from the zine The Heart's Best Treasure (1992)

Some of his roles were as Vincent Wells ("The Beast") in Beauty and the Beast (TV), Josiah Sanchez in The Magnificent Seven, and Hellboy.

Beauty and the Beast

Perlman, the "mane man," was very active and much discussed in Beauty and the Beast (TV) fandom. "Thanks to Ron Perlman's powerful acting, his evocative 'Vincent Voice' and his very effective, beastly make-up, he has become the source of many womens' romantic and sexual dreams." [1]

He made MANY con appearances, did interviews with fans, and was the subject of much discussion, speculation, and admiration.

The Cons

Fan Awareness and Careful Handling

Because there was frequent contact between fans and Perlman, both at cons and due to fans' knowledge that Perlman, like other TPTB, read some of their publications, fans often tiptoed around and discouraged criticism of the show and/or Perlman.

Some examples:

We're B&B fans — as representatives of such a high quality show, I feel we must all do our part to keep up a good image for its fandom, and demands for the impossible are not helpful or supportive. Just annoying. Whether or not "Catherine" returns depends solely, completely, on Linda Hamilton; the role will never be recast. If you can support nothing else, we strongly plead that you support and remain loyal to Ron Perlman and his decisions, for the sake of his priceless gift to us — Vincent.[2]

Subject of Many Zine Dedications

Examples:

I would like to dedicate this zine to all the above mentioned people in appreciation for their hard work and generous spirit. Most importantly, I would like to dedicate it to you, the readers, who ask for more, to Ron Koslow who now truly understands what it is about Beauty and the Beast we truly love, and to Linda Hamilton and Ron Perlman who turned a fairy tale into a thing of beauty that has touched so many. [3]

This series of books is dedicated to: Ron Perlman who, as himself, not Vincent, nearly two years ago inspired me to reach for my dreams. He gave me the little "nudge" I needed to put into action the series of events which enabled me to realize those dreams. Thank you Ron for your inspiration. [4]

This Book Is Dedicated To Ron Perlman... For the extraordinary talent which gave this beautiful dream life, for the respect and dignity he always afforded the character, for all the stamina and sacrifice and just plain heart it took to play Vincent week after week, and for the quiet strength that can only come from within; a strength that kept him true to himself even when some were determined only to see the fantasy, the mask, and not the man behind it.

Thank you for giving me a gift I thought had died...Thank you for the inspiration. [5]

Some examples:

  • "Courage for the Most Strange," in which Ron Perlman has a series of unsettling close encounters with Vincent...and contemplates the possibility of a Movie, from the zine A Prince Among Men (1995)
  • The Bridge (1989), "Vincent is an uptop man, physically like other men (he actually is written and drawn to portray Ron Perlman). He has the qualities (if not characteristics :) of Vincent, though. "[6]
  • The Closet Beast... and Beyond (1990), a humor zine in which Vincent is real and Ron Perlman is his front man
  • The 58th Episode (and "The 57th Episode: The Throat Convergence") (1991-92) from Lionheart #2 and #3
  • Two Beauties and a Beast, from Once Upon Another Time (1991), Vincent intervenes when two panting fans pursue Ron Perlman in the park...and tells them off in no uncertain terms.
  • Dimensions in Time, a story in Stories from Below (unknown date) (An AU story in which Ron Perlman gets hit on the head with a falling branch and is taken below to Father by Vincent. Ron sees them as the actors in his television series, not as the people they believe themselves to be. Eventually Ron and Vincent meet.)
  • Love & Light...The Fable (1990) (Catherine is transported to another world where she meets a nameless man whom she names "Captor." Captor's original form is that of Vincent Wells, but he is under a spell so that he greatly resembles Ron Perlman (though he has actually taken on the form of someone named Ian).)

Fan Comments

I saw Ron Perlman over the weekend in "A Few Good Men" in New York City, and let me tell you his character is as far away from Vincent as you can get. When he said the "F" word the first time, I almost died. I, unlike a lot of my B&B buddies, have a hard time seeing Vincent in Ron. I'd catch a movement, a walk, a sigh, or a hand gesture that for a second turned him into that noble lion/man we all love, but for the most part, I just couldn't picture him.

That's my problem, folks. Vincent is REAL to me. He is not Ron Perlman. He is his own separate entity. Sometimes it scares me to say that, to even think it. I start suspecting maybe my family and friends (those not into the show) are correct and that I AM crazy. But to give it all up would be impossible. Ask me to stop breathing and I'd have an easier time accomplishing it.

Hi, Ron. You are wonderful! So BIG and BROAD. And those THIGHS!! Those HIPS, those EYES, that oops, this is supposed to be a G-rated letter. When you stood up on that stage, your presence was over whelming, commanding.

Needless to say, I clapped like a maniac for all you out in fandom who won't, or can't, get a chance to see the play. I swear, when Ron was taking his bows, he looked straight at me. Yeah, right, Lorraine. He only had eyes for you. Okay, okay, but I can dream, can't I?? [7]
