About

From a flyer:

For those who haven't read BEYOND THE THRESHOLD, there is a continuing serial called 'Phantom Knight' which carries Catherine and Vincent on a journey different from any that have been conceived so far. It all stem from the realization of Vincent's origin which is revealed in the first episode of the serial. The zines also contain short stories, poems, art work, etc.

Issue 1

cover of issue #1

Beyond the Threshold 1 was published in 1989 and has 130 pages.

It contains a novelette, "Phantom Night" (continued in the next two issues) and two short stories. West did most of the art, though there is one piece by Charlie Grosvenor and a 10-year old child named Amber.

From the zine:

This series of books is dedicated to: Ron Perlman who, as himself, not Vincent, nearly two years ago inspired me to reach for my dreams. He gave me the little "nudge" I needed to put into action the series of events which enabled me to realize those dreams. Thank you Ron for your inspiration. Ron Koslow who recreated the Beast into something we all could relate to and appreciate on a realistic/fantasy plane. His brilliance will be remembered by all of us who appreciate what he has brought to us. I look forward to further creations from his fertile mind. May he live long and prosper.

Also from the zine:

Dear Readers, This is going to be a K-Mart style fanzine. It will carry different forms of fan materials from art, poetry, short stories, to a continuing serial and letters from fans (if I get any), even a script or two from time to time.

I want this to be a broad spectrum publication which can tickle the fancy of almost every type of fan. I will create the ongoing serial of "The Phantom Knight" and contribute a few short stories and scripts. But I want you, the fans, to help keep the dream alive by contributing to it yourselves.

The lifeblood of this series has been its loyal fans who have doted on the magnificent Vincent and his lady love, Catherine. Let's continue that fantasy.

Should you have anything you wish to contribute or wish to just write a letter to be published, see the following page for pertinent instructions as to how do so. Please, no explicit sex, inferred or "soft" sex is okay. Let's keep it in good taste so my mother doesn't have a coronary. All contributors receive a free copy of the publication in which their contribution appears.

I will endeavor to publish one zine a quarter, unless I get more material than that, then it will be more often. I am shooting for another one to come out around March, 1990.

The continuing serial, "The Phantom Knight" is my own idea as to the origin of Vincent and the direction the series could have taken using that origin as a base. You may not like the origin concept, but you may really like the adventures Vincent and Catherine are carried through as a result of the revelations of that origin.

The serial and its story line have no direct effect on the short stories I have written. As a result, it is entirely possible the short stories may follow the series story line or have one of their own. Each short story must be accepted on their individual merits. What I am essentially saying is that one story does not necessarily agree with another in content.

I truly hope you will enjoy this publication. I hopefully will have much more to put into the next issue. I want all the help I can get from you to help keep the dream alive. We can do it if we don't abandon the fantasy.

Hanging in there for an air date real soon!!

  • Phantom Night ( Catherine becomes involved in an investigation in which she unexpectedly discovers clues about Vincent's origins.) (1)
  • Mirage (Vincent has a fever dream in which he is a normal man.) (73)
  • Dear Britania (Tony Ramos appears.) (101)

Reactions and Reviews: Issue 1

Contains one novelette in which Vincent discovers, through Catherine, his origins as an extraterrestrial. Gives lots of planetary history and background. Also two short stories. Art is rather primitive; writing slightly less so.[1]

From the editor's foreword:

This is the second publishing of BEYOND THE THRESHOLD and I am very happy to bring it to you.

I have gotten some very positive feed-back from you and I appreciate the encouragement. This publication has several submissions by readers who wanted to share their talents and love of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST with other fans. I am pleased to help them do so. Should you wish to have your talents published, please feel free to send them to me for consideration (No explicit sex, PG13 only). All contributors get a free copy of the volume in which their submissions are used. I also welcome letters for the publication. Should you have any comments about BEAUTY AND THE BEAST or any fan activities, please feel free to write and indicate you wish it to be published. If it is appropriate, I will be happy to publish it. Amber Enterprises reserves the right to take excerpts rather than publishing the entire letter. I hope you enjoy this volume as well as the first. For those of you who have only received Volume II and not Volume I, you will have a difficult time figuring out "The Phantom Knight" as it is a continuing series. It began in Volume I and will continue throughout the publication of the books.

With best wishes for a wonderful immersion in the fantasy world of Catherine and Vincent.

Reactions and Reviews: Issue 2

Contains four short stories by West and others. Three stories are very much in the vein of the series (C at risk/injured, V saves her); in the fourth (“Friday Night at the Movies” by Debra Johnson), C introduces V to movies. The remainder of the zine is “Phantom Knight,” a continuation of West's novelette begun in BtT-1. In it, Vincent passes along the information on his origin to Father and Catherine and is beginning to work with the scientist storing Vincent's parents' dead bodies. Reviewer found a hint V's mother may still be alive and was dubious about the prospect of Vincent's being destined to save the world, superhero style. Poetry by Debbie Ristick.[2]
