Kiyotaka Ishimaru is a popular character in the Dangan Ronpa series. He debuted in Dangan Ronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc.

Popular Tropes & Fanon

• Autistic Kiyotaka Ishimaru: him having Autism is a very popular headcanon due to his socially awkward personality and his reliance on scheduling his life. There's been several meta works exploring his Autistic traits in canon, and some fanworks made by Autistic fans explore this headcanon further.
• Gay Kiyotaka Ishimaru: him being gay is a popular headcanon, more so than any other sexuality.
• Dork Kiyotaka Ishimaru: in-tune with his canon and fanon characterization, along with "adorable"
• Mastermind Kiyotaka Ishimaru: popular variant of the DR-fandom specific "Mastermind AU" where Ishimaru is the main antagonist of the series instead of Junko Enoshima. Although the "Mastermind AU" has been done at least once for each main Dangan Ronpa character, it has been done with Ishimaru much more than any other character. Many fans thought Monokuma's black, white and red color scheme as well as Ishimaru's canonical hatred of "geniuses," which most of the other students could qualify as, meant he was the Mastermind. He's also the only DR character with a canonical Mastermind AU design, as seen in the Japanese-only Dangan Ronpa "4koma KINGS" released in 2011. It has many of its own sub-tropes, including:
  • Mondo Oowada and Chihiro Fujisaki working alongside him, forming a trio where Ishimaru is the head, Fujisaki is the brains and Oowada is the brawn.
  • Ishimaru faking his death in chapter 3, making this AU part fix-it.
  • Kiyotaka Ishimaru/Mondo Oowada being a critical component, with some works having Oowada working with him out of love rather than agreeing with Ishimaru's actual beliefs, mirroring Mukuro Ikusaba's relationship with Enoshima.
  • Military Kink / Uniform Kink: commonly seen in fanart, where Ishimaru's Japanese navy military-style highschool male uniform has additional flares, with some works emphasizing his boots, giving him a military-style cap and giving him more military-like medals on his chest. The idea that Mastermind Ishimaru is commanding and strict are common, as well as the ideas that he's a dom/sadist. Also seen in fanart is elements of Imperial Japanese motifs, such as cherry blossoms, swords, and the "Rising Sun."
  • Kiyondo Ishida, a personality created by Ishimaru in his subconscious out of grief after losing Oowada in canon, may be his twin brother and used as a fall-man for his larger schemes, similarly mirroring Ikusaba's relationship with Enoshima.
  • Izuru Kamukura, an experiment by Hope's Peak Academy done to turn the talentless Hajime Hinata into someone with every known talent, may be allies with Mastermind Ishimaru, mirroring Izuru's canon relationship with Enoshima.
• Trans Kiyotaka Ishimaru: very popular, with female to male Ishimaru being the most common. Popular for transfic.
• Bottom Kiyotaka Ishimaru: bottom Ishimaru is more common than top Ishimaru. Some meta has been made about how some works (namely Ishimaru/Oowada ones) make him have uke tropes that would be out of character for him.
• Hurt Kiyotaka Ishimaru: common in angst and hurt/comfort works, as well as canon compliant ones.
• Depressed Kiyotaka Ishimaru: for works exploring him having depression.
• Kiyondo Ishida and Ishimaru Kiyotaka Are Twins: common AU.
