Kiyotaka Ishimaru & Takaaki Ishimaru is a common gen (combi in Japanese) relationship within the Dangan Ronpa fandom. The ship is between Kiyotaka Ishimaru, a main character in Dangan Ronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc (DR1), and his father Takaaki. Originally not mentioned in DR1, Takaaki comes from the spinoff Dangan Ronpa AE: Ultra Despair Girls, where we learn he was taken captive by the Ultimate Despair before the events of DR1, later freed, only to then become a target on the Warriors of Hope's hit list before escaping the Towa Memorial Science Hall, where he and the other people relating to the DR1 characters are being held captive. It has been shipped since AE was released in 2016.
Much of the relationship Taka has with his father is up to fan speculation, with fanon coming and going in popularity.
It's rare for a fanwork to focus primarily on their relationship.
Canon Background
Popular Tropes & Fanon
- Takaaki may be neglectful towards Taka. it can be implied he works long hours as a police officer and spent little time with him before the events of DR1. Taka's worry about not redeeming the family name, instead forcing himself to become a "perfect" or near perfect student, may be interpreted as something his father put upon him so he wouldn't have to himself.
- The opposite is also common. Takaaki may be nurturing of Taka's studies. Works featuring this may emphasize that, canonically, he loves his son. This might be more so as of the 2020s, though the idea that Takaaki was abusive was more common in the 2010s. Good Parent Ishimaru Takaaki is a canonical tag on Archive of Our Own.
- Takaaki may not like Mondo Oowada, Taka's friend in canon, and especially Kiyotaka Ishimaru/Mondo Oowada, which is one of the most popular ships in the DR fandom. It's often because Oowada's a delinquent, while what little we know about Takaaki can imply he's a cop who's quick to use his gun, (which he has on him in AE.) Sometimes he's also plainly homophobic.
- Some works may focus on Takaaki's thoughts on him surviving his own son.
- Taka's mother/Takaaki's wife is never mentioned in canon. If talked about, common fanon is that she died before the events of the game. A divorce having happened is much less common.
- Takaaki, Taka, Oowada and Takemichi Yukimaru, who shares Takaaki's role in AE but for Oowada instead of Taka, may be seen as close in a non-despair AU post-DR1.
- Hiroko Hagakure, Yasuhiro Hagakure's mother and a main character in AE, is Takaaki's most common partner if he's in a romantic ship. Taka and Yashuiro may become step-brothers, though this overall is a rare trope.
- Kiyondo Ishida, another form of Taka, may be seen as Taka's twin brother.
