Junko Enoshima is a prominent, popular and breakout character in the Dangan Ronpa series. She debuted in Dangan Ronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc and was later revealed to be the central antagonist. Her shadow lingers in the central antagonists of Dangan Ronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, (Izuru Kamukura,) and Dangan Ronpa V3: Killing Harmony, (Tsumugi Shirogane.) She is also an antagonist in Dangan Ronpa 3: End of Hope's Peak High School.

Enoshima is the "Mastermind" of Dangan Ronpa's first Killing Game. The popular idea of a Mastermind AU in the Dangan Ronpa fandom focuses on other characters being the mastermind instead of Enoshima, with Mastermind Kiyotaka Ishimaru being the most common.

She also went by Ryoko Otonashi in Dangan Ronpa Zero, a manga spin-off.

Popular Tropes & Fanon

  • Non-Despair Junko Enoshima: common in Non-Despair AUs where Enoshima didn't choose to spiral the world into despair.
  • Enoshima Being Herself: Enoshima is often seen as "her own warning," in fanworks, similar to "dead dove." Gore and murder are common tropes for her. Related is the sub-trope Junko Enoshima Being an Asshole.
  • Sane Junko Enoshima: to contrast with the idea that Enoshima is "insane" or otherwise needlessly cruel to others. Fanworks featuring a sane Enoshima may improve her canonical relationships with her sister, Mukuro Ikusaba, and classmate Mikan Tsumiki, to make them less abusive. It may also be used for character studies.

Cosplaying Popularity

Alongside the mascot character Monokuma, Enoshima is considered one of the most recognizable Dangan Ronpa characters, even by those outside the fandom. She is incredibly popular, and in 2018 was even named the "most popular game character for cosplay" in the Gamers Edition of Guinness World Records[1]. This popularity often mystifies, and sometimes even spoils, new fans who are confused about how a character who seemingly dies in the first chapter of the first game has become so iconic. She's been compared to Harley Quinn in terms of cosplay popularity.

Snowthesaltqueen / Yandere.Freak / Mary-Anne Oliver-Snow

Snow is an infamous, yet popular cosplayer in various fandoms. For many, they're most known for their Enoshima cosplays.

On January 27th, 2019, Snow (as Mikan Tsumiki) and a friend, Discount.yam (as Nagito Komaeda), did a CMV and a photoshoot in West Hill Cemetery. They sat on graves with in their cosplay without permission from the cemetery or the deceased, causing a major stir on Instagram by those in the Danganronpa cosplay scene. Later, both Snow's and Yam's accounts were mass flagged and deleted. The cemetery was called by multiple people, and now both have since been banned from the location. Much of the fandom's reaction to this is archived on the #snowthesaltqueenisoverparty2k19 IG tag.

Around January 18th, 2021, Snow accidentally killed their friend Helen Hastings in an accident with a gun Snow believed was unloaded. Helen was a fellow cosplayer, having done Karkat Vantas and Mystery Girl from Steven Universe in the past[2]. When this news got out in October, the already infamous Snow flounced from the scene, returning in 2023. Many major news outlets covered the story and often referenced Danganronpa by name in them.

Relationships

This is purposefully an incomplete list, as Enoshima is shipped with much of Dangan Ronpa's cast. Please add any notable relationships in fanworks if they are missing.

Due to the nature of Enoshima's popular couplings spoilering the plot twist of Trigger Happy Havoc, Japanese pairing names involving her are often specific phrases or keywords.

The order seen should be what's most popular unless marked with "possibly." ENG portmanteaus are also subject to change. Relationships listed fall into GL, NL, BL, Poly, Combi or Cargo.
