Gore is a term used to describe graphic and explicit depictions of violence, bloodshed, injuries, and bodily harm in various forms of media, including art, photography, literature, movies, video games, and more. It often involves detailed and gruesome portrayals of wounds, mutilations, or other disturbing imagery related to violence.
Gore fanworks tend to be more frequent in fandoms with gory canon sources such as Berserk, ASOIAF or Elfen Lied.
Many online platforms and communities have policies against the posting or sharing of gore fanart or any content that depicts explicit violence or graphic imagery. They may remove or restrict such content and may even suspend or ban accounts that repeatedly violate these rules. Other online communities may restrict gore content by age.
Gore fanworks can be controversial and cause negative reactions from other fans, even when properly tagged.
Gore as form of harassment in fandom
Sending gory pictures or any explicitly violent, or disturbing content with the intent to cause emotional distress to other fans can be a form of harassment within fandoms. Ship tags can be targeted by antis or individual artists can be tagged on gory posts. This is usually done in ship wars or to artists who use controversial tropes in their fanworks such as underage.
