Canon

Harley Quinn was originally created for the Batman: The Animated Series by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm, first appearing in the Season 1 episode Joker's Favor (September 11, 1992). Due to her popularity with fans, she later was introduced into the actual Batman comic book series, in Batman: Harley Quinn #1 (October 1999).

Harley has continued to appear in DC comics and DC animated movies. She also has a role in the Arkham video game series. A character believed to be Harley also had a very brief cameo in the CW series Arrow.

In her first live action appearance, she was portrayed by Margot Robbie in the DCEU film Suicide Squad. Robbie will reprise her role in an upcoming movie Birds of Prey.

Common Tropes and Storylines

  • Dr Quinzel becoming Harley Quinn is a storyline that is often expanded upon in fanfiction. It is a common in Batman source materials featuring Harley Quinn, but it also appears in fandoms where this character hasn't appeared, such as Gotham and the Nolanverse.
  • Pregnancy fics are common given Harley canon grandchildren in the BTAS, and her canon pregnancy in the comics. Both of these events were mentioned in the source material, without been greatly expanded upon allowing creators to fill in the blanks.
