Chihiro Fujisaki is a student from Dangan Ronpa. He was a prominent character within the series and popular with fans. Fujisaki debuted in the first game of the series, Dangan Ronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc, though did not survive The Mastermind's Killing Game.

Chihiro Fujisaki's Gender Identity

Ever since Trigger Happy Havoc was first translated by English-speaking fans in 2013, there has been discourse surrounding how Dangan Ronpa fandom at large portrays Fujisaki's gender.

Fujisaki played a major part in shaping Trans Characters in Fandom discussion in the 2010s. Although Fujisaki is not canonically transgender, his story was very relatable to many Trans Dangan Ronpa fans. Some fans prefer only Trans or Cisgender interpretations, and many don't mind either way. Non-Binary Fujisaki, while not implied in canon to the extent MTF Fujisaki was, is also common in fanworks.

Much of this discourse comes from misinformation and exaggeration. For example, in 2013, Tumblr user capusetto wrote a popular blog post about a Trans Female Japanese DR fan by the name of hisanakagami, which can be read in its entirety here, Archived version. From 2013 to 2014, the post got over 5,000 reblogs and 4,000 likes. In February 2014, the OP deleted, presumably after anons on FFA discussed how hisanakagami got many facts about Japan wrong in her posts and likely wasn't Japanese, Archived version, which can also be seen in a 2020 Reddit post here, Archived version. This particular wank was even called Fujisakigate by some fans.

Although harassment surrounding the larger Fujisaki Gender Discourse isn't unheard of, there has been no documented instance of Male!Fujisaki fans getting mass threats for their view of the character. Many instances of recorded harassment were often due to personal beefs, younger fans being unable to resolve disagreements within reason and larger fannish war over Social Justice and Fandom. Some anti-Male!Fujisaki sentiments were exaggerated to prove the Male!Fujisaki argument was morally superior to the other.

As of 2020, while the topic continues to divide the fandom, it appears both parties largely keep to themselves regarding the issue. Fans may have Male Fujisaki on their DNI list.

Relationships

Many of his ships are considered gen (combi in Japanese), even if they are romantic in Japanese-speaking DR fandom. In English-speaking DR fandom, this is also the case, though less so.
