In Haikyuu fandom, fans may be divided due to their team and character interests. Most fans of the rival teams that appear in canon tend to group themselves in a type of niche.

Karasuno

School: Karasuno High (Japanese: 烏野からすの高校こうこう Karasuno Kōkō)

Mascot: This team's unofficial mascot is the crow. The team's colors are black and orange.

Tropes:

  • Crow symbolism sometimes leads to wingfic.

Fandom

Since Karasuno is the "protagonist team," it tends to be the most well-liked. Fans don't tend to designate themselves as Karasuno fans, as it is often implied.

Popular in-team ships on the Karasuno team are:

Nekoma

School: Metropolitan Nekoma High (Japanese: 都立とりつ音駒ねこま高校こうこう Toritsu Nekoma Kōkō)

Mascot: This team's unofficial mascot is the cat. The team's colors are red and black.

Tropes:

Popular pairings include Kuroken (Kuroo/Kenma) and Levyaku (Lev/Yaku). Kuroyaku (Kuroo/Yaku) and LevShiba (Lev/Shibayama) are also popular for Nekoma-only ships.

Many fans ship Kenma and/or Kuroo with characters on teams other than Nekoma, such as Bokuto (Bokuroo) or Hinata (Kenhina), respectively. Other popular cross-team Kuroo ships are KuroTsukki (Kuroo/Tsukishima Kei) and Kurodai (Kuroo/Sawamura Daichi).

Aobajohsai (aka Seijoh, Seijou, Aoba Johsai)

School: Aobajohsai High (Japanese: 青葉あおば城西じょうさい高校こうこう Aoba Jōsai Kōkō)

Mascot: There's no "official" unofficial mascot for Aobajohsai, but since the characters for "aoba" can also be read as "green leaf" (and Ushijima likens the team to "plants growing in infertile soil"), many take the mascot to be plants or ivy. Another popular interpretation is of a kingdom where the players are knights, since the team's banner reads "Rule the Court" and the captain, Oikawa Tooru, is referred to as "The Grand King." The team's colors are mint green and white.

Seijou, despite being a narrative rival team, has a remarkable following, particularly among western fans. Fans tend to identify with one particular ship on the team, and only interact with that part of the fandom.

Shipping

Fans tend to ship Iwaizumi/Oikawa and Hanamaki/Matsukawa - the team’s second semester third-years - predominantly, sometimes cross- or poly-shipping. Another popular ship is Yahaba/Kyoutani. Kunimi and Kindaichi are frequently shipped together (Kunimi/Kindaichi), while Watari does not receive much attention from fans. Some characters, notably Oikawa, Iwaizumi, and Kindaichi, are shipped with characters from other teams. These ships include Oikawa/Kageyama, Oikawa/Kuroo, Oikawa/Ushijima, Iwaizumi/Ushijima, and Kindaichi/Kageyama.

Fukurodani

School: Fukurodani Academy (Japanese: 梟谷ふくろうだに学園がくえん Fukurōdani Gakuen)

Mascot: The unofficial mascot for Fukurodani is the owl. The team's colors are black and white.

Tropes:

Haikyuu Girls Teams

The Karasuno High also has a girls volleyball team which is seen in minor role in canon. In 2015, a trend began in which fantartists would create OC character designs to imagine the equivalents to the volleyball teams of each school. The trend was begun by 8oo with the Nekoma girls team in early March. 8oo's post gained over 400 notes.

slimyhipster (shounenkings), a popular Seijou fanartist, followed with with the Seijou girls team on April 24, 2015. The original post gained over 8,000 notes and further art of the OCs was also well received.

Other fanartists began creating their own teams for different schools.

Fans created art for the OCs.
