Dyce is a prolific fanwriter, having written many, many stories over the years for a multitude of fandoms, including Marvel Comics (where she was known especially for her Generation X pieces), X-Men Movieverse, Smallville, Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, Firefly and Avatar: The Last Airbender, to name a few. She is also well-known on Tumblr for her original fiction.
Dyce originally began posting fanfic online sometime around 1996 or 1997 and in 1998 was awarded a Creative Licence for Best New Writer. She does not appear to have posted to Alt.comic.fan-fiction, but she was a member of the Outside The Lines mailing list and was featured on many archives.
In 2000, Amanda Sichter provided the following feedback on the Outside The Lines mailing list, mentioning Dyce had given up (comics) fanfic:
Well, I wish you hadn't given up writing because I have so many stories of yours in my "keep 'em" file you must be damned good. And on that note - Maturity in B Minor and Rising Sun were wonderful (and I'm not even a vaguely baby-liking person so that's pretty amazing (for Rising Sun) oh, you know what I mean). Your poetry is lovely - The Lecture wonderful and gentle - The Mask You See brilliant and Dammed Time & Damned Time quite some of the funniest things I've read (Stryfe shimmying? *narf, narf*). And the Happy Families things - especially Kitty & Pete - and The No Story was beautifully constructed and interspersed humour so beautifully with well-seasoned (and *acceptable*) human angst that it was a delight to read. Sure you won't take up writing again?[1]
Dyce's FanFiction.Net account lists her as posting Harry Potter fanfic in 2003, focusing on the 'villain' characters such as Percy Weasley and Severus Snape, and she was part of the HGSS Digest. Then in 2006, Dyce posted "Accountable" a Snape/Hermione story dealing with the consequences of a drunken encounter between the characters. Unfortunately for Dyce, the story became the centre of Drama within the HP fandom[2] and seems to have pushed her away from the fandom. She had other fandoms, however, and continued posting Smallville (2003-2004), Firefly (River/Jayne, 2006-2008, including the Horseshoe Nail Series), Avatar: The Last Airbender (2013-2017) and The Hunger Games (2014-2015). Her most recent postings on AO3 have been Discworld stories in 2020 and 2021. Dyce's range covers comedy to darkfic and everything in between. She has consistently received 4.5 and 5 star reviews on Goodreads for her longer pieces,[3] has the unofficial record for most CBFFAs won (13 in total, including the Writer's Hall of Fame for 2001 and 2002), and makes her mark in whatever fandom she joins with her thoughtful handling of difficult subjects, her ability to evoke scenes with just a few words and her sense of humour, drawing readers in even when they are not a fan of the subject material:[4]
I barely tolerate Firefly, but I cannot recommend Dyce's "Horseshoe Nails" series enough. Dyce manages to capture the distinct voice of each character in turn, both in dialogue and in prose. The last story in the series is a Dead Fic, but the penultimate story is a staisfactory [sic] ending in its own right.
Such is the power of Dyce.
Notable Works
- "Accountable" (Harry Potter) - perhaps as infamous as notable, but even the critics agree it's very well written.
- "The Horseshoe Nails series" (Firefly/Serenity) - an alternate retelling from the end of the series and through to the movie.
- "Generation Cat" (Generation X) started with Kittens, and then became a series of stories about Generation X being turned into cats.
- "Maturity in B Minor" (Generation X) a serious look at the aftermath of an attempted suicide by Jubilee and how Jono saved her.
- "Happy Families aka The Song Title Series" (X-Men/Generation X) a companion piece to Maturity in B Minor, Jubilee's friends and teammates react to the news of her attempted suicide.
- "Land of Blood and Honey" (X-Men Movieverse)- third in the "Cubs" series, about the next generation of ferals.
- "Psycho-Analyzing My Symbiote" - Venom's latest trip to the head-shrink yields a diagnosis which has not been explored before. OTL Monthly Feature for November 1999.

Dyce's Fic Look for anything Dyce has written, although it's scattered across many archives (Fonts of Wisdom and ComicFic.net have much of it). Particular Recommendations: Generation Cat (link to first story), Rising Sun, The Song Title Series, Maturity in B Minor, Godless Annie (look for Dyce on the page), her poetry -- but I honestly don't think she knows how to write anything that isn't good.
