Initial thoughts

I started this page. From my perspective, I feel like there is a lot more controversies to be described (which I'm not familiar enough with), and I'm sure insiders have more to say on how to characterize the genre. Admittedly my knowledge is mostly from reading comments and reactions rather than first hand experiences - I'm familiar with HPMOR but that's about it. And of course, more examples would be nice to have. That said, I hope it was good enough as a start. --Potpotkettle (talk) 13:04, 2 March 2022 (UTC)

Title

"title shouldn't be capitalized" - why not? I thought this was similar to pages like "Accusation Fic" and "Original Fiction". Fanlore:Capitalization seems to prefer "Fic" over "fic", too. --Potpotkettle (talk) 08:26, 1 July 2023 (UTC)

User:Quaelegit and User:Rossi Please see above. --Potpotkettle (talk) 08:05, 16 July 2023 (UTC)
Because I usually see it all lower case out in the wild. Same with "original fic/origfic" too. I guess you can move the page back if you want but I definitely want the lower case redirect because it looks *wrong* to me to be writing a paragraph about rationalfic and having to capitalize the link. -- Quaelegit (talk) 21:34, 18 July 2023 (UTC)
Alternatively we could change the name to Rationalfic, if that synonym is commonly in use? There are a lot of trope pages using a similar format and its one way around the title case capitalization. --Auntags (talk) 22:51, 18 July 2023 (UTC)
ETA: And we would keep Rational Fic and Rational fic as redirects, if we went down that route --Auntags (talk) 22:53, 18 July 2023 (UTC)
I'm not opposed to "Rationalfic" but to be honest that would be rarer than the two options. All three deserve redirects at least, though. --Potpotkettle (talk) 01:17, 22 July 2023 (UTC)
In my experience ratfic is much more common than rationalfic, and i think that's a much less clear title for the page. Maybe worth adding them as redirects if we haven't yet. -- Quaelegit (talk) 23:09, 24 September 2023 (UTC)

I collected titles ending with " fic" and " Fic" from Category:Tropes & Genres. Out of 28, there are 24 Fics and 4 fics.

Although it's not 27 vs 1, most seem to use title case capitalization per Fanlore:Capitalization. (That doesn't mean we should use Capitalized Title in the main text, though, and I should really have created the "Rational fic" redirect when I created this page under the title "Rational Fic".) --Potpotkettle (talk) 01:17, 22 July 2023 (UTC)

Lol (Laughing out loud) I created two of those four (Fobwatch & Vault fics) Sorry! I'm happy to move those, and leave a redirect to the non-capitalized title name. And I can start a conversation about the fourth one, if we're agreed to standardize??? --Auntags (talk)
Update - the other three articles using lowercase fic in the title have been moved to capital Fic. Is there agreement on moving this page to Rational Fic? Rational fic would remain as a redirect. --Auntags (talk) 21:08, 1 August 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for working on this. I think we can go ahead as long as Quaelegit is okay with that. --Potpotkettle (talk) 14:17, 3 September 2023 (UTC)

Hi, sorry for taking so long to reply. I appreciate you gathering the evidence Potpotkettle -- I agree it seems we've settled on a standard here of Title Case For Trope Names. I don't like this -- most of these are not treated as proper nouns when used in casual speech. It's more like Wikipedia:Science fiction, or take a look at how Wiki's Fiction Template handles capitalization. There's only a few of these that I would expect to be capitalized in the middle of a sentence (e.g. Yet Another Halloween Fic), the rest I would expect to be treated as common nouns (e.g. look at these mentions of "cabin fic" on FFA: ex 1, ex. 2 -- note that other parts of the description are capitalized, but "cabin fic" isn't, ex. 3, Ex. 4, ex. 5, ex. 6, ex. 7. Although here's an example capitalizing it "Cabin fic", the vast majority use all lower case or common noun capitalization rules. ) But I'll take this up as a "general policy" on, idk, some style/guidelines talk page. Anyways, as long as we have the redirects it doesnt matter too much what the page title is, i guess, what started this is that I didn't want to write "[[Rational Fic|rational fic]]" on Chili and the Chocolate Factory: Fudge Revelation. -- Quaelegit (talk) 23:08, 24 September 2023 (UTC)

Moved page to Rational Fic, and updated or created redirects for Rationalfic and ratfic. I've also removed the attention gardeners flag but feel free to add that back to the page if this issue isn't fully resolved. Thanks --Auntags (talk) 19:43, 27 November 2023 (UTC)

Double Redirect

I just removed a double redirect - I don't really have any skin in this particular game. ;) Rossi (talk) 02:04, 22 July 2023 (UTC)
Just for informational purposes for others, here are the double redirects changed by Rossi: [1][2][3]. (I really mean no ill, just mentioning exact edits because they can be hard to discover later.) --Potpotkettle (talk) 03:02, 22 July 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for collecting them! It's nice to have the record for later. -- Quaelegit (talk) 22:46, 24 September 2023 (UTC)
