The Pokémon video games are a series of popular role-playing games whose goals are to raise and battle Pokémon. The main series of game are divided into "Generations," which are most easily differentiated by the locations in which the games takes place as well as the available player characters. There are also a number of spin-off games that digress from the main series' formula.

Characterizations

For characters like Silver or Green or Barry, and for a lot of the other NPCS like the Gym Leaders, what you need to know about their personality is right there in the game and in the dialogue. [...] As far as the player characters go, there's no right or wrong way to characterize them - for the most part. For characters like Red, you'll notice most of the fandom writes him as being this silent badass who's always a bit of a jerk. And this is back [sic] by canon because obviously you get to interact with Red in GSC and HGSS. In the newer games, you have the male/female player option, and if you chose one, then the other takes on a different role in the world. So if you were playing Sapphire, for example, and chose to play as May, May as Norman's daughter still doesn't have a set in stone personality, but Brendan, who'll be an NPC, does. And if you choose to play as Brendan, then it's reversed, and so really it all comes down to deciding for your fic which character you want to assume which role. That'll change the way you characterize them.[1]
