Pokémon Sun and Moon (commonly abbreviated as SUMO) are the sequels to the sixth games in the Pokémon franchise Pokémon X and Y. They released worldwide on November 18th, 2016 for the Nintendo 3DS. Each copy of the game is able to be played in nine languages: Japanese, English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Korean, and Simplified and Traditional Chinese.
Plot Overview
The player controls a protagonist that you name, (a young boy named Elio or a girl named Selene,) and explores a fictional interpretation of Hawaii called Alola. You start out with either Rowlet, Litten or Popplio, given to you by Hala, grandfather to Hau, one of your rivals. Later on, you meet Lillie and her brother Gladion, who are running away from the Aether Foundation, created by their mother Lusamine, and also act as your rivals, though this information isn't initially given to you.
The games feature seven Trial Captains and four island kahunas, which must be defeated in Pokémon battles before you reach the newly founded Elite Four, consisting mostly of already established characters. Along the way, you encounter Team Skull, a gang of teenage hooligans led by Guzma and Plumeria.
During the story, you learn Lusamine has been taking advantage of Team Skull and using them to defend the Aether Foundation from suspicion. After she opens a portal to another dimension, which releases Ultra Beast Pokémon all over Alola, the player rescues both Guzma and Lusamine, both trapped on the other side, and save the region before becoming its first Pokémon Champion.
Characters
Guzma and Lillie are considered the most popular characters to have come from these games within the fandom. Guzma is a breakout character, being one of the most popular in the Pokémon franchise overall and being a fan favorite to many. Lillie's popularity primarily comes from her being one of Ash Ketchum's classmates the anime series, though overall it's a mix of both of her interpretations.
Guzma is a sympathetic, but abrasive character, who values his own strength more than anyone else's. Initially skeptical of the player, he later becomes their ally. Angst surrounding his home life, which was implied to be abusive in canon, and the hurt/comfort he finds in Team Skull are prominent in fanworks that focus on him. It is often considered to be a found family.
Lillie is initially very demure and largely follows in the footsteps of who her mother wanted her to be. As the story goes on, she gains confidence and becomes a Pokémon trainer. Fanworks focusing on her largely also involve her brother Gladion or the female protagonist Selene.
Most of the main characters in the games have a large amount of fanworks and their own followings. Along with the already mentioned characters, Nanu, kahuna of Ula'ula island, and Professor Kukui, who helps create the Pokémon league, are also popular with fans. Lana, Kiawe, Mallow and Sophocles are also commonly seen in fanworks for the anime series, as they are Ash Ketchum's other classmates.
Other notable characters include the remaining Trial Captains and island kahunas: Ilima, Acerola, Mina, Olivia, Hapu, and Kahili. Anabel, a Tower Tycoon from Pokémon Emerald, is also further fleshed out in the games. Looker, a character introduced in Pokémon Platinum, is also prominent. Red and Blue from Pokémon Red and Blue appear in the Alolan Battle Tree, and Colress, the second boss of Team Plasma in Pokémon Black 2 and White 2, appears in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon as a member of the Ultra Recon Squad.
In Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, Team Rainbow Rocket is established by Giovanni, serving as a boss rush for all of the villains in the series up to that point, sans Guzma and Lusamine. Faba, one of Lusamine's employees, takes on a villainous role. Wicke, another Aether employee, is also in fanworks.
