Generations are used in the Pokémon fandom to denote the chronological divisions of Pokémon canon. Each generation usually denotes a new setting, new Pokémon, and new characters.

The term is most commonly used to refer to the Pokémon video games, though the anime, manga, trading card game, and other merchandise are also usually updated with the new Pokémon and features along with the video games at the start of a new generation. Though anime is split corresponding to each generation, it is almost exclusively referred to by series, not generation. Additionally, the anime series usually resume directly after the last, whereas the different video game generations may occur years apart or simultaneously.[1]

Fanworks based on the Pokémon video games usually include the generation in their headers as to indicate the characters and setting as well as the era and plot (e.g. Generation I Red/Blue versus Generation II Red/Blue).

Generations are usually denoted by Roman numerals, though "Generation I" and "First Generation," for example, are used interchangeably.
