-Shipping Name Origin

The history of Cynthia/Steven's ship name is one of the most troubled in the entire fandom. LoliShotaShipping was the first name coined of them, sometime between 25 February 2005[Notes 1] and 21 July 2007. This originated from an in-joke headcanon on Bulbagarden that Cynthia was a lolicon and Steven was a shotacon[1], partially because ships involving them with younger Pokémon characters were popular.

Around the same time, DarkSteelShipping was coined, likely on 22 July 2007 by Golden Ash on Serebii.net[2] This spawned some discourse about the name, saying that because LoliShota was coined first, that DarkSteel couldn't be used and that shippers would have to accept the name.[3] Shippers over the years have said that it was a shame that this was its name[4][5] Some heavily disliked the name and refused to use it[6][7], while it was embraced by other fans.

During the 2010s, Cynthia/Steven grew more popular as a whole than it had when the names were first coined, typically going by either-or. As of the 2020s, DarkSteel is far and away the more popular name. As of 2021, LoliShota is considered an "untouchable ship name" on the Neverending Romance ship list, operated by Bulbagarden members; an archaic name that shouldn't be used but has a long history of being used.[8]
