Subjects of Fannish Interest & Meta

[discourse, trivia, popular memes, character analysis, fan reactions, really anything]

Lyra or Kotone?

Many fans disliked the character's English name and instead opted to use her Japanese name, Kotone, even when using the English names for other characters, when Heart Gold and Soul Silver first released outside of Japan. Some also adopted the fannish nickname "Soul," in reference to SoulSilver, one of the games in which she appears in. "Soul" also appears as one of the default name options in the games. As of the 2020s, this seems to have died down, and Lyra is far more common than Kotone in English-speaking PKMN fandom.

Lyra or Kris?

Many fans of Kris resented the fact that she was replaced by Lyra in Heart Gold and Soul Silver. There is therefore a distinct divide between Lyra fans and Kris fans (or HeartSoulShipping fans and NewBarkShipping fans) in some parts of the fandom.
