Fans most often use the term Johto Trio (城都トリオ) to describe the group formed by trainers Ethan (Hibiki), Silver (Silver), Kris (Kris) and/or Lyra (Kotone).
Ethan and Silver first appeared in Pokémon Gold and Silver, released in 1999/2000, the second series of Pokémon games after Pokémon Red, Blue and Yellow. Ethan is the playable protagonist while Silver acts as your rival. Kris came later in Pokémon Crystal, released in 2000/2001 as the playable female protagonist; the first in the series. Lyra came after that in the remakes Pokémon Heart Gold and Soul Silver, released 2009/2010, as a complete redesign of the playable female protagonist and functionally replacing Kris.
"Kanto Trio" may also be used to refer to other trios of Johto characters, but the gameverse trio of Ethan & Silver & Kris &/or Lyra is often understood to be the Johto Trio. On Pixiv, the 城都トリオ tag refers to the gameverse Johto Trio, while the ジョウトリオ tag refers to the Pokémon Adventures manga version of the trio.
The polyamorous version of their relationship, Ethan/Lyra/Silver (with Ethan/Kris/Silver being less common), is also popular.
