Ethan is a Pokémon Trainer and a playable character originally from Pokémon Gold and Silver. He is popular with fans, though less so than one of his female counterparts, Lyra. He is also in Pokémon Masters.

He was not canonically known as Ethan until the unveil of Pokémon Heart Gold and Soul Silver in late 2009, giving him an official name 10 years after being previously unnamed. Fanworks made before 2009 mostly refereed to him as Gold, after his cross-canon counterpart in the Pokémon Special manga. Many fans prefer the name Gold over Ethan.

The Pokémon he is most associated with are Togepi, Typhlosion, Marill and Lugia.

Fanon/Alternate Names

The protagonist of Gold and Silver as well as his cross-canon counterparts have been given several names by fans. Other than Gold, these are:

  • Hiro, coming from one of the default names in Gold and Silver if the player does not specify their name.[1] This was a localization of Hiroki [ヒロキ ], which filled the same slot of data in the game in the Japanese release.
  • Chris, coming from his default name in Pokémon Crystal. This was seen as the male equivalent of Kris, the female playable character, which originated from this default name for her in Crystal before later becoming canon.

  • Together, Ethan, Silver and Kris/Lyra make up the Johto Trio.
    • In Japanese, their gen (combi in Japanese) relationship is called 城都トリオ, meaning Johto Trio.
    • This is not to be confused with ジョウトリオ, which is this same group but for Pokéspe.
    • ジョウト組 may also be used, though that just translates as Johto Group, so it includes any large group of Johto characters.
  • Ethan & Silver is also popular on its own.

Popular Tropes & Fanon

Ethan is also commonly portrayed as fun-loving and bright to contrast more with Silver in friendship and M/M fic. This is inspired by his portrayal in Pokémon manga, as seen in Pokemon Masters' own interpretation of the character.
