Ethan/Silver, known mostly as HunterShipping, ヒビライ (Hibirai) and/or ライヒビ (Raihibi), is a popular ship in the Pokémon fandom. It pairs Ethan (Hibiki) and Silver (Silver), the male playable character and the rival character in Pokémon Gold, Silver and Crystal respectively.

PreciousMetalShipping, which pairs Gold and Silver, is its cross-canon counterpart in the Pokémon Special manga. Unlike the majority of other Pokémon pairings, this version of their ship is more popular than its gameverse equivalent.

Canon Background

Popular Tropes & Fanon

  • Opposites Attract: coming from their characterization in the Pokémon Special manga, Silver is often portrayed as moody and brash while Ethan is generally a more friendly and optimistic character.

Character Names

Both Ethan and Silver initially had no canonical names, only getting them years later. Fanon personal names are very common in fanfics, especially ones made before Pokémon Heart Gold and Soul Silver's release in 2009. Ethan is often called Gold, the same name as his manga cross-canon counterpart, and Hiro[Notes 1], particularly from 2002-2010. Silver has been called: Black[Notes 1], primarily from 2002-2007, and Kamon[Notes 2], primarily from 2006-2011.

-Shipping Name Origin

The name "HunterShipping" was coined first, sometime between 19 November 2002[Notes 3] and 08 December 2004.[Notes 4] It refers to how Silver pursues/"hunts" down after Ethan in the games.

"PreciousMetalShipping" was coined later, sometime before 27 April 2005.[Notes 5]

The pairing used to also have a small section on Bulbapedia, which can be seen here (in archived form), Archived version.

Japanese Ship Names

Silver, for many years, had no canonical name. He was known to many fans only as "Rival." This is reflected in the half-dozen ship names used by Japanese fans for this pairing, which are:

with Seme Ethan

  • ヒビライ (Hibirai), their most popular ship name, which means Hibiki x Rival.
  • ヒビシル (Hibishiru), meaning Hibiki x Silver.
  • 主♂ライ (Male Protagonist x Rival), which is technically a general tag for several Pokémon pairings but is primarily used for this pairing.

with Seme Silver

  • ライヒビ (Raihibi), their second-most popular ship name, which means Rival x Hibiki.
  • シルヒビ (Shiruhibi), meaning Silver x Hibiki.
  • ライ主♂ (Rival x Male Protagonist), which is technically a general tag for several Pokémon pairings but is primarily used for this pairing.
