Blue Oak/Red, known mostly as NamelessShipping, レグリ (Reguri) and/or グリレ (Gurire), among many others, is a very popular ship in the Pokémon fandom. It pairs Blue Oak (Green Ookido) and Red (Red), the player's rival and the playable character in Pokémon Red, Blue and Yellow respectively.

More-so than any other Pokémon character, Blue is often referred to by his name in Japan, Green, in English-language fanworks. See Pokémon Green and Blue localization impacts on Pokémon fandom for more information.

PalletShipping, which pairs Ash Ketchum and Gary Oak is its cross-canon counterpart in the Pokémon anime. OriginalShipping, which pairs Green Oak and Red in the Pokémon Special canon, is in the same boat. Both ships have different dynamics from Nameless however, and relatively few fans ship all three.

On Archive of Our Own, the pairing is the most popular relationship in the whole Pokémon franchise, though sites such as FanFiction.Net and DeviantArt have a much lower amount of fanworks for the ship.

Canon Background

Popular Tropes & Fanon

  • Neurodivergent Red: a common trope for fanworks of him as a whole. Most of the time, this is seen with him having a speech disorder of some kind. He is also headcanoned as Autistic by many fans. This comes both from his role as a silent protagonist and because he does not say any lines in GSC or its remakes. Fanworks may focus on Blue learning to understand Red better.
  • Cave Fic: many fanworks have Blue reunite with Red after the events of RBY. This often involves Blue meeting Red in a cave on top of Mt. Silver, where he lives, which is a fanon idea as it's not known if Red lived in a cave during GSC's story canonically.
  • Red and Blue's appearance in Pokémon Sun and Moon is believed by many shippers to be them on their honeymoon, as Hawaii (Alola) is a popular vacation spot.

-Shipping Name Origin

The ship took several years before it caught on with fans. From 2000, when -shipping names were first coined on Bulbagarden, to 2009, it does not appear to have had a name on Neverending Romance. "OriginalShipping," which is for their manga counterparts, was coined first, sometime between 15 December 2005 and 12 October 2007.[Notes 1]

Sometime in early 2009[Notes 2], MasaraShipping was coined[Notes 3] for their RBY relationship while NamelessShipping was for their relationship in Pokémon Fire Red and Leaf Green.[Notes 4] "Masara" came from Pallet Town's name in Japanese. Eventually, Nameless overtook Masara in terms of usage, falling into obscurity by the early 2010s.

In the 2020s, it became more common for fans to refer to the ship by their Japanese ship names Reguri and Gurire. Shippers typically choose Reguri out of the two options, regardless of if Red would be considered the seme/top in the fanwork or not. In Japanese, the order in which characters are listed in a ship name signal which one is the seme or uke.

The term "Nameless" comes from both characters not having canonical names until Pokémon Gold, Silver and Crystal. The pairing used to also have a small section on Bulbapedia, which can be seen here (in archived form), Archived version.
