Pokémon X and Y (commonly abbreviated as XY) are the sequels to the fifth games in the Pokémon franchise, Pokémon Black and White. They released worldwide on October 12nd, 2013 for the Nintendo 3DS. The worldwide release was a first in the series, as prior games always released in Japan first. They were also the first Pokémon games to have every officially produced localization available on each game cartridge, those being: Japanese, English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, and Korean.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A would later release in 2025, acting as an expansion of Kalos, similar to how Pokémon Legends: Arceus expanded upon Pokémon Diamond, Pearl and Platinum in 2022.

Plot Overview

The player controls a protagonist that you name, (a young boy named Calem or a girl named Serena,) and explores a fictional interpretation of northern France called Kalos. You start out with either Chespin, Fennekin or Froakie, given to you by the region's Pokémon Professor, Professor Sycamore. Your neighbors, the playable character you didn't choose, Shauna, Tierno and Trevor, also act as your rivals.

The games feature eight gym leaders, which must be defeated in Pokémon battles before you reach the Elite Four, considered the four strongest trainers in the region aside from the Pokémon Champion, Diantha. Along the way, you encounter and defeat the villainous, secret society-like Team Flare, led by Lysandre, who wants to harness the power of Xerneas and/or Yveltal to remake the world into a beautiful paradise. The player also encounters AZ, who once also harnessed the power of one of the two legendaries to end a war and to grant his Floette and himself immortality 3,000 years ago, which he was successful in doing.

Characters

Serena is far and away the most popular character from XY, being one of Ash Ketchum's traveling companions in the anime series, replacing Iris. The gym leader Clemont is also popular due to his role as Ash Ketchum's other traveling companion. Repurposing the current female protagonist in the games to be Ash Ketchum's primary female traveling companion in the anime had happened before with May from Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald and Dawn in Pokémon Diamond, Pearl and Platinum. Many fans consider this Serena, a Pokémon Performer, and the Serena seen in the games, either the Pokémon Champion or the player's neighbor, to be cross-canon counterparts of the same character.

Other than Serena, Professor Sycamore is also popular. He's the most popular professor in the series in terms of shipping, with him also being popular for self-shipping. Siebold is also a fan favorite, though this was largely only in around 2013 when XY were new. Korrina and Valerie are also fan favorites in some circles. Other notable characters include the remaining gym leaders and Elite Four: Viola, Grant, Ramos, Olympia, Wulfric, Malva, Wikstrom and Drasna.

  • Pokémon Z: Pokémon games typically got an updated version a few years after the first two released prior to these games. Although a "Pokémon Z" is implied to be planned, given the games' naming structure and coinciding with the name of the legendary Pokémon Zygarde, it never did. Many fan theories have arose surrounding the game and what could've led to its cancellation.
