May is a Pokémon Trainer and a playable character from Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire. She is a fan favorite and the focus of many fanworks. She also makes appearances in Pokémon Masters. While she does have a counterpart in the Pokémon Anime also named May, and a counterpart in Pokéspe named Sapphire Birch, these characters are distinct enough for their own articles.

Unlike Kris and other previous Pokémon protagonists, she never had a fanon personal name, since she was named May in-game when Ruby and Sapphire released in 2002. This set a trend that all future releases in the main-line Pokemon series followed, and made it easier for fans to discuss her online. Fans may call her Sapphire, but this was no issue.

The Pokemon she is most associated with is the Torchic line, including Combusken and Blaziken.
