First Fanfic You Ever Read? is a Dreamwidth post by lady_windermere.

As lady_windermere was herself a Buffy fan, many responses were very much focused on commenters first experience of reading fanfiction in BtVS fandom, but some commenters had experiences of fandom before this. Several non-native English speakers recall encountering fanfic for the first time in the form of presumably unauthorized translations of fics into their native languages. Following lady windermere's example, many commenters also recalled how they found slash fanfiction.

The Post

Just wondering, do you remember the first fanfic story you read? I started off with Spuffy, I know I've ended up with Spangel mostly, but yes the first time I read fanfic, I was all into the Spuffy stories.

I googled for fanfic, and the first one I got was Humanitis by Saber ShadowKitten. I started with a great! It is in eight parts, and you can find it here if you are interested. I really enjoyed it, and began to read lots more fanfic.

At first I really resisted slash. It took ages for me to see a relationship between any of the males in the Buffyverse. Then I read a Spangel, and it just made sense. They were so well suited for each other. I didn't stop reading Spuffy for a while. Not until I read more slash, and those M/M relationships took over.

Ok, that is my story. How about you? When did you start reading fanfic? Was the Buffyverse your first trip into this world, or did you read other venues first? Do you remember your first story?

I'm old...it really was Kirk/Spock!

I'm not sure what my very first was, but certainly it felt like Chocolately Goodness by Madpoetess. Was that her name back then? I was blown away by the quality of writing, just out there, free and written by people for the love of the characters and writing. I didn't even know about fanfiction until that story. Heard the word slash, googled it and stepped through to a whole new world. I still love Spander, have no appetite at all for het though will read if a story is recc'd. Same as other pairings I'm not interested in. If the writing's great, I will go there. But for me, it's all about slash and I, like you, started with one of the greats.

First fanfic...

It was in 2002, a Buffy story with some OFC vampire slayer which I now realise was a total Mary Sue. She was both a slayer and a vampire and she turned Buffy because that way they would be stronger or something like that. lol. It was posted translated into Icelandic at a Buffy forum, probably without permission, and when I ran out of chapters I went looking for the continuation in English. Never did find it since that's when I realised there were hundreds of thousands of stories out there, which was such a pleasant surprise.

I read lots of Spuffy and then I was reading this story that turned into a Spike/Buffy/Angel threesome, and I loved it, having a huge threesome kink. And then one day, in the story, Buffy was away at school and the boys got bored.

Yeah, I never went back to het after that. lol

Great topic. My first foray into fanfic was in a tiny fandom called New Professionals. I read a fantastic h/c story by Alyse and Chya called ROULETTE and it killed me ded with its awesomeness. I'd totally rec it to anyone even if you don't know the guys. It's long and angsty and well written.

As far as Buffyverse goes I think I read a Kantayra fic first.

spangel started my fanfiction reading but I had been a fan of gay comics for a while so I guess it was natural that I was drawn to spangel.

I have no idea what I read first except that it was on ff.net *shudders* luckily I discovered better sites really quickly.

I really can't remember the name of the author or the story, it was 7 years ago (I was still very new to the internet) and Harry Potter fan fiction. It was a story about Harry's parents going to Hogwarts, pro series. I think James Potter somehow had a twin sister and Sirius Black too, totally AU. But that's how I discovered the wonderful world of Sirius Black/Remus Lupin... Ah, good times! I rarely read Harry Potter fics now but that's how it all started.

With Buffy when I first started looking for fiction it was Angel/Xander (I had just finished season 1) but it wasn't really my thing. And then Spike came to the show and I discovered the wonderful world of Angel/Spike. My life hasn't been the same. ;) Again, I can't remember details about my first spangel story. It was multi chaptered and from what I remember Spike was enslaved by some vamps that took advantage of his chipped state and then Angelus came and "saved" him by becoming his master. When Angel was re ensouled he took Spike with him in LA but Spike was pretty broken. I wish I could find it again. Anyway, sorry for spamming your journal with my yammering :)

Yes, I do remember it very well :)

I stumbled over the page by accident, started with my little obsession with JM and DB, and I found a page by ShadowSaberkitten and I was like "OOOOOOO stories, *YAY* ":)and I started to read one where Buffy, Cordy, Willow, Xander, Oz, Spike and Angel had been attacked by Pirates or something and they had to run away in a small boat... Angel kissed Spike, and I was just surprised (I've never seen the complete Buffy or Angel series" did this really happen in the series? Then I continued to read, and they did the yummy naughty together and I was like WTF?OMG! This can't be true, and at last... It was kind of sexy with the thought of the two vampires shagging and now I'm here where I stand today :) Writing and reading Spangel slash

The End

That is such a good question! Hmmm. It had to have been on fanfiction.net, because that's all I knew of fanfic before I found incasink here on LJ. And, like you, I started out Spuffy. That's all I can remember though.

I can't remember when I got into spangel, but I do know Inca was my first. Such good stories to start out with (and I wasn't even a fan of AU!) She's the one that inspired me to write, but my first fanfic is so horrible! It's over at ff.net if you are really interested. But I don't want to go searching for the link! *G*

Oh I remember my first story, although I haven't been able to locate it since. I *think* it might have been on BAPS. Basically I started out reading reviews/analysis, and then decided that maybe I should try to dip my toes in the fic waters...

This was all back in the post-Chosen period (mmmmaybe before AtS S5 started showing over here, I'm not sure. But I didn't go online until post-Chosen). Anyway, the fic was a fairly standard Buffy-goes-to-LA-post-Chosen-and-Spike-shanshues-Spuffy-4-eva type thing (quite short and - even to my newbie eyes - obviously not very original, but it was fairly well written and with good character voices). Didn't rock my world though, and thought that maybe this fic thing wasn't for me, but then I found Caro's (spikewriter) site and, more specifically, The Watchers' Diaries: The Apocrypha - and was blown away. Not only was it wonderfully written and stunningly original, but it also showed one of the main *points* of fanfiction: That it could do things you couldn't do on screen.

I have been hooked ever since! *g*

I started reading at 19, when i first got to Uni. Since I had a compu but no net access and sometimes found myself unable to sleep late a night i started d/l very poor copies of Stargate and there was a link to fanfic websites. I found the mpreg archive and gateway and started reading Stargate. I then happened upon Jack/Daniel, and since i was wondering if i was the odd bod for seeing it before hand, clicked on it and read.

My first story was an mpreg, i tried to revise it last year but gae up when the 2 chapters revised came to more than the fic. It was short, jumpy and undecriptive, i managed to take it offline everywhere but the mpreg archive-which i still cringe about lol.

The first fic I read was a Spangel one, by incasink, actually. It was the first and best thing that came up when I googled "Spike and Angel slash". ;D I think I was about... 15, maybe 14

[ xenodike ]
I started out spuffy too. I just feelt empty after the show so I wnt on a few swedish fansites and through there heard about fanfic. I can't remember what the first spuffy story was but the first slash story was Old Friends by Birdy and Mouse... and that was that. No more spuffy for me, spangle was just... right and consider that back then I didn't even like Angel all that much.

[ petzipellepingo ]
I started reading Buffyverse (Spike/Buffy) back in my TWoP days and haven't stopped. The only other fandoms I've read is one House & one Moonlight by flist members.

I'm still a Spuffy girl at heart.

I have no idea what my first fic was but it would have been in the Spider-Man fandom. I remember the first buffyverse fic I read was Dimensionally Challenged by Amy. It was a Spike/Xander/Peter Parker fic. That's how I was introduced to Spike. Really liked him and remembered my friends used to talk about Buffy at school, which I had no interest in at the time. Questioned them, brought the DVDs and read spander. Then I somehow moved onto spangel. Don't read much spander anymore. I did read some spuffy for awhile but I've pretty much gone off that again except for certain authors.

I don’t actually remember the first slash I read but I do remember thinking this is weird and kept reading. I obviously ended up liking it :P

[ bogwitch ]
My first fanfic experience would have been in a Blakes 7 sometime in the Mesolithic (okay about 1992).

I have no idea what any of them were about, but I do remember the first Buffy fic I read which was Ouchies by Hungsta.

[ aschicca ]
Hmm my very very first fanfiction was a Spuffy one too but it ended with Angel thrown on the mix too and that got me thinking about Spangel... I really don't remember who wrote that story or where I find it (oh wait... I think it was an italian site offering links to english fanfictions about Btvs but I'm not sure).

Anyway I'll always be grateful to that story because it was the one that got me digging around until I found "Waking William" by felisblanco. My very first Spangel fic :D It's still one of my favourites *G*

[ Moscow Watcher ]
I can't believe it! My first fic has also been Humanitis (translated into Russian, no less)!

I still prefer Spuffy, although I occasionally read good slash. But with Torchwood in sight I feel more and more slash-friendly.

[ tamibrandt ]
First Spuffy fic I ever read was Three Hearts Entwined by Mrs. Muir. Six months later, I stumbled onto Bridie/Mouse's Bound By Blood and the whole Spangel relationship made sense to me. I've been a devout spangel girl since then.

[ nimenic ]
I read my first fanfic back in 2003 by a mistake. I was on a swedish Harry Potter site and clicked along on the different links and somehow found myself on the fanfic part of the site. I don't remember what it's called or if it was a english fic translated into swedish but my first fic was a Harry/Draco one. After I read some H7D fics I moved onto Sirius/Remus.

I don't remember my first BTVS/ATS fic but I know it was Spangel. I remember watching Buffy and I saw the 'kiss' and I thought "yeah, that's hot." And Spangel have been my OTP ever since. I might read and write in the SPN fandom but Spangel will always be my favorite.

(sorry for the rant)

[ girlpire ]
this is how i found it: i was telling my mom about how hot angel was, and so i googled david boreanaz to show her a picture, and the search returned some spangel manips. we were both shocked, but then later i did it again and went to the site with the manips, because i was curious (m/m has always turned me on). turns out it was jenny's love that dares site, and the first fic i read was time is the fire in which we burn. that's right, i started with a great too! i consumed all of her fic (almost all of it was spangel at the time, with some wesley and some giles mixed in) within about a month, and i actually wrote my very first fic (also spangel) without having read fic written by ANY other person. when i went in search of a place to post my fic, i came across incasink in a yahoo group called forging_ghost, and then through her i was introduced to livejournal. the first manip i ever made was for inca's story "belief."
*nostalgic*

this is a great topic, btw. i've enjoyed reading all the answers! and i'm so glad i didn't start out with spuffy fic, like it seems a lot of people did, because if i had then i probably wouldn't have gotten into fandom.

[ gillo ]
I'm not sure it counts, but I first started with the Sunnydale Socks. From there I followed links to summer_of_spike and on to "All About Spike" via a different route at about the same time.

And I'm still Spuffy to the core, I'm afraid.

[ inkingwords ]
I don't remember the name of the first fic, but the first author was Angel S. Somehow I came across her site. Which got me hooked into fluffy Spike/Willow. I didn't start reading any kind of slash until almost three years later.

[ lusciousxander ]
I came to fandom in 2002 through fanfic (Xander/Spike) First fic I read was Sands of Time, a S2 Spander fic, and then I got even more hooked on the pairing when I read The Stranger Things Series. I wasn't hot on Saber Shadowkitten's Spander. I thought she tended to make Spike a bit too girly, I've always liked her Xander, though.

S4 was just airing in my country, and oddly enough while I had seen a few glimpeses of S2 and S3, and knew how Buffy, Xander and Willow looked like, I never saw Spike. I was reading Spike and Xander as a couple and I didn't know how Spike looked like. From the way Spander fic described him, I thought he was a god of beautiful. I was quite disappointed when I finally got to see his face, he wasn't my type, and I thought Xander was better looking. Weird how tastes differ. :)

Sigh... the old days. I fell off my chaire when I first watched the "Nummy Treat" scene in Hush. lol
