The SPN Artbook was a Supernatural artbook published in 2017.

About

The Supernatural Artbook was a fanzine project produced by armellin (Sasha), jaredsnuggles (Sarah), and jesusonthetortillas (Sasha), known as S3.

The first post on the project's official Tumblr account was made on November 7th, 2017 and outlined details about the Artbook and how to get involved.

Themes

Rather than having an overarching theme, the Artbook was split into five chapters which each represented a group of characters from the show.

The themes were:

  • Hunters
  • Angels & Heaven
  • Demons & Hell
  • Supernatural Beings
  • Civilians

These five themes were each symbolised by an icon found on each corresponding chapter page, and the Artbook's front cover.

Planning

XFORGOTTEN-PAGEX SAID:

I find it so cool that you all are doing this 😄 it's so amazing. Kudos for being able to organize and put this all together. I'm curious though, how DID you manage to pull this all off so smoothly? P.s.- all the previews look AMAZING

Thank you :) It may look smooth from the outside looking in, but my god we’ve had some bumps that we’ve had to overcome. Think of Sasha (@jesusonthetortillas) and myself (@jaredsnuggles) as the panickers and Sasha (@armellin) as the sensible-ish one that tells us to stop 😂

Honestly, the answer to your question is planning. We built the blog up for about a week before we launched it because we wanted to make sure that we had every single little detail organised and answered before we started involving artists.

The FAQ page was the most important page by far so we spent a lot of time thinking of every tiniest detail to add onto that to make sure we hadn’t forgotten anything important.

After that it was the case of messaging 250ish artists that we loved. The three of us had compiled a list of artists from Tumblr and Deviantart that we adored. What we could never have imagined was the incredible response we got from everyone. So many artists said yes to participating and we now have around 210 (maybe more, I don’t remember the exact number).

Working out pricing and shipping costs were the biggest pain in the arse. You have no idea. And then poor Sasha had to redo the bloody things too after the shipping relocated from the UK to Russia.

Oh another way we have kept everything running smoothly is that we have 5 google sheets that we are currently using.

1. Artists Participating + their chapters choices
2. Characters each artist has chosen
3. Artists’ countries
4. Artists who have submitted and the details for their book credits
5. And one for ticking off who has checked in for Check In 2

The girls who did @artbook-s were also invaluable when we first came up with the idea of doing this book so thank you so much guys for dealing with our many questions.

But honestly, the biggest element of the project that is making it run so smoothly is that everyone involved with it, both artists and fans, are so supportive and enthusiastic about the artbook that it truly is just making it an amazing experience for us. You guys are great and we love talking to you all and getting to see just how talented you are every single time you submit us a preview. We will sit there for five minutes and just stare at the beauty of your pieces. We are proud fangirls of all of you guys.

Thanks,

S3

Artists wishing to participate in the project submitted a first and second choice pick for which theme they would like to produce a piece for in an effort to keep each chapter equal in size.

Any artist could submit their portfolio for a chance to participate.

Artists who were active in the Supernatural Tumblr community at the time were also sent invites to be a part of the project.

Acknowledgements

Back when this project was no more than just a simple idea, we knew that we wanted to create an artbook that defied all previous notions of ‘popularity’. Our goal was to recruit artists from around the world, regardless of skill level, or fame, and we couldn’t be prouder of the artbook we have created.

Now, we get to finally showcase the finished artbook to you, our amazing supporters who have been with us the whole project.

The artbook features nearly 200 artists from 37 countries, and 91 characters from the show, both new and old.

Thank you to every artist who participated in the project, both those who are collected in this book, and those who submitted their portfolios during the sign-up process.

Thank you to Mar (@acklesjpeg) for designing this book, it looks amazing.

Thank you to the girls from Artbook-S who very kindly answered all our questions about how to organise a project like this, your wisdom was very much appreciated.

Thank you to Sasha for assisting us with all the finer details of the project.

And in the end, the months of planning, long nights, endless email communications, coding, designing, advertising, and commitment to making this artbook happen paid off.

We are very proud of what we have achieved and we hope that you enjoy.

Thanks,

Sasha, Sarah, and Sasha (S3) xxx

After the Project

S3 sent physical copies of the Artbook to Jared, Jensen, Misha, Mark, and Ruth.

Facts

  • Hunters, Angels & Heaven, and Supernatural Beings were the most popular first choices[74].
  • Unexpectedly, S3 had to put out a post asking more Artists to draw Sam and Dean. This was in response to the Artists Character Survey results which, as of the publishing of the post on November 15th, only one Artist had responded to state they would be drawing the brothers for the Hunters chapter[75].
  • Rather comedically, just before the campaign reached 100% funded, the counter broke on the Indiegogo campaign page[76].
  • The busiest day for sales was Valentine's Day[3].
  • The United States was the clear winner in terms of book sales, with 275 Artbooks sold for a total of $14,120[3].
  • Europe as a continent bought 137 copies of the Artbook[3].
