Chuck Shurley is a fictional recurring character from the Supernatural television series, portrayed by Rob Benedict.

Canon

In season 4 of SPN, Sam and Dean discover a series of books called Supernatural and track down the author, Chuck Shurley. Initially, he purports to have foresaw events and Castiel reveals him to be a prophet. Later, in season 5, Chuck appears dressed in white which lead to the fan theory that Chuck is God. This was confirmed in season 11. He is eventually defeated.

The Winchesters

Although Chuck never directly appears in the series, in the season 1 finale of The Winchesters it's revealed that the Akrida were created by Chuck as a failsafe intended to wipe out all of existence if he ever failed. Dean discovered this after his death and broke Jack's "no interference" rule for the multiverse to give John and Mary the tools to beat the Akrida and save the multiverse.

Fandom

There was a popular fan theory in the early seasons that Chuck was God, this was later confirmed canon in season 11. However, there is some debate in the fandom to whether the original Chuck we meet in season 4 was just God's vessel, that was later subsumed by God, or if it was God from the very beginning and that Chuck was just a creation and was never his own person.
