Description: In a world where corporate conformity is the order of the day, slash can be characterized as being as diverse as the people who read it and write it. Yet certain character types and attitudes seem to dominate. Why are most of the heroes young, slim and pale? Why are women seen as a threat in certain stories? If these and other questions flit through your brain, come to the panel and find out what other people have to say.

- Track 1: Coming out the closet: Hetfic - You Know You Read It (and Write it!). There's even a website dedicated to slashers who write hetfic. What's going on? Drop in to this panel to find out.
- Track 2: Taboo Subjects. Description: At on time, slash was considered beyond the pale but now it's getting write-ups in newspapers and magazines. So, what's considered taboo in slash today? Is everything up for grabs or are there things that make you go "hmmm?"

Come to this panel to get some answers, share some experiences and generally have a very good time. Moderator: Jackie G.
2:00 pm – 3:00 pm
- Track 1: X-Files. Moderator: Diana Williams
- Track 2: Do we actually have a "Community" in Fandom? Description: We all want a place to call home and for many, fandom has become just that. But are there limits to that home? Are people really building 'community' or is it something else? Share your experiences and views on this panel.

Charity
From Progress Report #1:
BASCon has chosen two wonderful charities to support this year. The first is the “Lavender Youth Recreation and Information Center” (LYRIC) http://lyric.org/ LYRIC provides a safe after school place, in San Francisco, for gay, lesbian, bi, transgender and questioning persons under the age of 25. LYRIC provides tutoring, job training, health education, and social activities. LYRIC also sponsors a statewide toll free and anonymous hotline, offering peer support, health and sexuality information, and referrals to young callers. The second charity is “Pets Are Wonderful Support” (PAWS) http://www.pawssf.org/ PAWS help people living with HIV keep their pets. Services include an animal food bank, subsidized veterinary care, dog walking, litter box maintenance, grooming, foster care and adoption when necessary. In addition to direct client services, PAWS plays a large role in educating the medical and veterinary communities about the benefits and risks of animal companionship for people with AIDS.
