I've been in fandom since the 90s. It all began when, during computer class, I accidentally stumbled upon a Card Captor Sakura fansite and realised that the stories there archived were not, in fact, the summaries of the episodes I had been searching for. I'd already been imagining fanfiction in my head long before that without knowing what it was, so it was a pleasant surprise!
The first years of my exploration were spent lurking. I absolutely devoured fanfic during my free time, quickly realising that I didn't have to stick to the canonical pairings of mainstream media, but could actually explore the world of m/m and queer relationships. That is what I mainly stick to nowadays.
I was mainly lurking on Lj, in several communities, and was lucky enough to experience Snarry, Clex and Batjokes there (needless to say, I do not, in any way, shape or form, support JK Rowling's statements and I've had a hard time enjoying the HP fandom for a while). I participated in Kink Memes anonymously for a long time before posting under a pen name.
I’m an avid reader on AO3 and keep track of the changes in the styles of pairings I enjoy as a hobby. Yes, I’m that person who works hard to read all the fics of certain pairings.
Part of my irl work is translation work, so I help out translating for fandom spaces and Fanlore, this includes helping with comic/doujin, fanfic, meta and comment/quote translation (mainly Mandarin Chinese, Japanese, Castilian, Portuguese, Italian and French). Anytime I am forced to use machine translation (e.g. for Korean) I try to make sure to let people know. Do not hesitate to change machine translations if you find them incorrect!
I also bind fanfic and create props for fanfiction. It's very fun and a sweet way to cherish a loved story.
I'm currently more focused on helping out with the FanloreProject:Baldur's_Gate, but I also have an interest in helping out with information related to fandom in different communities around the world.
Saving fanworks and how to find them in the future
I spent a few years unable to have proper contact with fandom (at a certain point in time, I had to have a friend e-mail me fanfiction... Not a good kind of nostalgia) and was horrified when I returned to find that tumblr had had an adult content purge and that many of my favourite authors had deleted their stories as well. This led me down the rabbit hole of saving fanworks. I created a very small group project called The Lost Fanfic Archives that aims to recover stories that are currently inaccessible due to old broken links or are deleted (outside AO3). Due to the nature of the project, the group is hidden. Stories without an author's DNR are freely shared with those who ask and there is a lot of e-mailing back and forth. Non-DNR stories are sent out to open Archives to be shared publicly amongst fans. Also, because this is time consuming work, the group works only with certain pairings or authors at a time. The active pairings searches are:
For my own sanity's sake, I download everything I enjoy reading (and sometimes complete sections of fandoms). I also regularly ask other archivists for help recovering deleted AO3 stories for my own personal library.
Nothing makes me sadder than being unable to reread an impactful piece of work. Because of this I try to keep all my work up, no matter my personal feelings about it. Unfortunately my Kink Meme stories have been largely lost.
It goes without saying that I am a big fan of this! Keep what you love close to you, lads! I personally use Calibre with Fanficfare to keep everything organized with its metadata (here's a handy tutorial and a more recent one). I also bookmark everything (on PC) using Tampermonkey and an extension that adds the title, author, workID, summary to bookmark notes automatically. My set up is a bit more pimped out, but with these anybody can keep their bookmarks safe.
