Talk:Destielgate
Page Creation
So I've started off this page after the discussion on the Talk:Dean Winchester/Castiel page. Don't have much mental energy at the moment to do much else on it atm, though I'll definitely be coming back to add more from the perspective of a non-fan. There's a lot to get through for this, so if anyone has things to add, please feel free. OfMonstersAndWerewolves (talk) 20:50, 16 December 2020 (UTC)
Charity Fundraisers
In response the finale a group(s) of fans set up fundraisers in honor of each of the main characters:
- Castiel fundraiser - https://give.thetrevorproject.org/fundraiser/3037563; archive link
- Dean fundraiser - https://donate.nami.org/fundraiser/3040106; archive link
- Sam fundraiser - https://web.archive.org/web/20201128060551/https://www.togetherwerise.org/fundraise/samwinchester (via the wayback machine)
The Castiel and Dean fundraiser pages are still active, but the Sam fundraiser has since been closed, but thankfully has been saved on the wayback machine.
Plus fundraisers in honor of some of the supporting characters:
- Jack fundraiser - https://charity.gofundme.com/o/en/campaign/random-acts-10-year-anniversary/MeganCrocker; archive link
- Gabriel fundraiser - https://fundraise.actionagainsthunger.org/fundraiser/gabrielsgift; archive link
- Charlie fundraiser - https://www.classy.org/fundraiser/3042431; archive link
- Eileen fundraiser - https://www.mightycause.com/story/Ofvepf; archive link
My question is, should the info about the charity drives go on this page? Because it is not specifically about Destielgate, but is about a response to the finale. -- Kingstoken (talk) 22:46, 11 June 2021 (UTC)
- I think yes! From the original discussion about the scope of this page, which is here (Talk:Dean Winchester/Castiel#Separate page for canonisation/season finale?), anything related to Destielgate/SPNgate/season finale/season 16 can go here. And in the future, if one section gets very big it can of course get its own page! (We already have a Desitel Wedding page \o/) At the minute the section on the reaction to the finale is pretty short, so info about activism coming out of the fandom at that time would be a great addition. And info about individual fundraisers can also be added to the relevant character pages too!--Auntags (talk) 19:28, 12 June 2021 (UTC)
Dates
Date(s): 5th November 2020-Present (Still ongoing)
in the page's infobox. I...think it's fair to say that it's over, now? Like, there's been "anniversary" bumps in interest in November 2021 & 2022, but those were very much retrospectives, not signs of continued developments across these full two years. That said, I'm not sure what to put as the end date. November 19th (the day of the s15 finale airing) is definitely too soon, but i'm not sure exactly how much longer the hype/fandom wank/etc. lasted. -- Quaelegit (talk) 13:24, 5 December 2022 (UTC)
- I agree, it was very much a 2020 thing. After the finale there was a lot of discussion and fix-it created, etc, but all of that died within a few months -- Kingstoken (talk) 14:48, 5 December 2022 (UTC)
Links that might or might not be useful on the page
(List by me but feel free to add more -- Quaelegit (talk) 08:05, 27 April 2023 (UTC) )
- Post by soulvomit, Archived version from 6 November 2020 (right after 6x18 aired), discussion of fans who did not interpret the "I love you" scene romantically. reblog with more comments?
- link to the actual Fake Italian Dub video. currently I think we only have the creator's explanation of how they made the vid linked on the page.
- would it also be a good idea to dig up posts with the real italian dub?
- Tiktok by Jonathan Tanigaki -- not really related to Destielgate directly, it's a tiktok about the US election, but it was made at the same time and got reblogged a lot amidst Destielgate memes
- conspiracy theory that the "I love you" scene was filmed separately because Jensen Ackles is homophobic"
- me @ spn fans tonight -- meme response to the explosion on tumblr on November 5th
- reaction to November 5th and the following week of chaos, Archived version, maybe stick w/ the responses to 6x18?. Posted by amonzrhinos on 7 November 2020.
- here's a reaction to the finale if we want more for that. -- wait this is about some new supernatural spinoff thing??? was posted in 2023.
- #destiel 2020 tag on destielfanworks, which seems to be an aggregation blog
- art by werepires, Archived version -- we probably don't need more art on the page but this one is quite nice lol. and a reblog of the post that inspired it, Archived version since the version linked by the fanartist has since been deleted.
- should i track down some "Season 16" memes or does this page have enough memes. EDIT: eh, found some mishapocalypse 2.0 ones & added them to the Mishapocalypse page
- this sounds like "Season 16" style fan theorizing??, but its from 26 November 2020.
- we already have ENOUGH memes on the page but i really want to put this "Y yo a ti" Death Note meme for the 2 year anniversary somewhere, it's funny, Archived version
- Also two years on: a retrospective/explanation of the finale, from a metafandom perspective (I'm pretty sure neither of these commenters has watched the show) Tumblr link and directly quoted:
[memecucker]
Idk anything about Supernatural but apparently Castiel died 6 times before he got eaten by super Hell and was ressurrected directly by God each of those times and then still managed to come back from that final one bc some teenage indigo child that was born of the President and his mistress (the President is actually possessed by Lucifer) counts as a nephilim bc Lucifer is an archangel or whatever anyway that kid became the new God and was like restricting Heaven i forgot what i was saying oh yeah the gay angel i guess got ressurected yet again
[discoursedrome]
as I understand it the ending was basically just a monster of the week episode where one of the principals died randomly and said “don’t resurrect me this time, that never works out” and then that was the end, and everyone was super mad
