Kathy Stanis was a fanwriter and fanartist, best known for their work in Star Trek: The Original Series fandom, focused on the pairing of Kirk/Spock.
Stanis would compile an LOC index detailing all the reviews of all the past year's stories in K/S letterzines.
She was also known for her traveling cappuccino machine. There are many, many mentions of fans being appreciative of her ad hoc barista skills at the con, Shore Leave, where she made coffee drinks on demand.

Sample Artwork
from Beyond Dreams -- "I get very moved when I see this beautiful work by Kathy because I was there when she decided to create this for Janet’s Kaleidoscope zine, literally days before Janet passed away. It’s beautiful in its own right, however, and the curved kaleidoscope shield is drawn perfectly as well as Kirk’s face especially. The slanted and gradient shaded design in the background creatively frames this lovely work." [1]
from First Time #49, poem by Robin Hood, art by Kathy Stanis -- "Ah, Errand of Mercy! And those glorious outfits. Ms. Stanis captures them in soft tones of gray, evoking thoughts of a memory treasured. When you read the words of Robin's poem it all becomes clear. For once Kirk did not see Spock as an officer, but as a man. And, she says, "The definition was desire." Very provocative thoughts to accompany a dreamy image." [2]
"this is an early piece of artwork by Kathy. And even though it reproduced a little pale, it still shows the skill and quality that she puts into all of her artwork. I love those Organian outfits and how they stand close and look at each other. Also another good example of how background adds to a drawing and I love how Kirk’s hand rests lightly on the table." [3]front cover of Scattered Stars #11, inspired by the poem “Soul Musician” by JS Cavalcante -- A fan comments on the covers: "These pen and ink drawings are very well-designed—I especially love the Spock cover with the figure playing the guitar (so perfect for Spock!) emerging from the black into the white. And the matching Kirk is so imaginative—Kirk in a long toga — indeed! And I completely appreciate the complexity of drawing a Vulcan lyre. And at the proper perspective." [4]
cover of Scattered Stars #11inspired by the poem “Soul Musician” by JS Cavalcante -- "The only art in this zine are the covers done by Kathy. The front is Spock playing a guitar—possibly wearing a tee-shirt and blue jeans (it's B&W). The back is Kirk (long-haired) playing some sort of lyre (okay, okay, so I flunked music history) and wearing an ancient type long tunic/toga affair (no way am I gonna say dress!). My first reaction was "Huh?" and I really wasn't too impressed. It would certainly have helped if there had been a story to go with the pictures (there is a poem which goes with the back cover). But both covers are different and do look like Spock and Kirk which is more than can be said for a lot of art—including that by well-known artists on paperback novels and highly touted posters. These are semi-realistically done (and here I reveal my lack of knowledge about art terms). They are reminiscent of art that Vel Jaeger used to do, with maybe a dash of Gerry Downes. After looking at them for a while, I can say that I still don't care for them personally, but if I had to rate them, I'd say they deserve a 7 on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being tops." [5]
titled "Wondering," from First Time #45 -- for the story "When the Rain Comes": "Wow! I really love this portrait of Spock. Perfectly executed, it captures that wonderful look of consternation that comes over our Vulcan’s face when he is trying to figure out some human idiosyncrasy or has some other equally weighty problem to solve. I can almost see the wheels spinning fast and furiously in that elegant head! Beautifully done! " [6]
"Strength and character. One of the best Spock's ever." [7]back cover of First Time #45, Chris Soto & Stanis -- "I hope to know the title of this piece before the Philon awards because I happen to think it's totally gorgeous! I find it beautifully drawn, Kirk's face is particularly nice, and Spock resting on his hip is too delightful. I love its playful quality - we know that a position like that might not be possible — but that's the very thing I love about this drawing. It's so unusual and I get the feeling Kirk is almost floating. I think this back cover of Chris' is one of my favorites. Kathy Stanis is one of our wonderfully talented writers, but here she shines as a wonderfully talented artist, as well. Such a softly drawn Spock, photographic in quality, but not in emotion. I feel I can read that serious, thoughtful expression on his face! The technique is impeccable. I want to see more art from her. Please!" [8]
The Index
Stanis compiled at least two, perhaps three, indexes to K/S LoCs printed. A fan also mentions an index by Stanis compiled in 2001: "...each year Kathy Stanis compiles an LOC index detailing all the reviews of all the past year's stories—an excellent resource." [9]
