A beautiful, sexy story about Kirk and Spock in the Nexus. A funny surprise ending too. Very nice.

This post-Generations story is written with Kathy's typically strong lyrical language. "Kirk looked at Spock and saw all the years they had been together, saw the strong Vulcan face at the noon of its prime. He looked at his own hands, feeling a potent energy surge from his center." And how about "...and he had imagined Spock laying down that strength and allowing Kirk to feast on him, to melt Vulcan constraints with his heat." I love that image, feasting on Spock. I often wish I could do that....

The story was a little confusing, probably because I haven't seen and don't intend to ever see the Generations movie. I think the author should have tried harder to provide a setting I could grab on to. I felt like the characters were in some amorphous no-where, mist and fog swirling about them, a reflection of the ambiguity of the time line. Perhaps this was deliberate on the author's part, but I felt uncomfortable without an anchor for my mind's eye.

I also wondered at the motivation for the guys coming together at precisely this time, so late in their lives. The story didn't really provide it, and so I was a little lost as to WHY they were dancing around each other sexually right now. I felt like I'd walked into a movie halfway through, and at first I thought that was because of my lack of specific knowledge of Generations, but surely that movie didn't provide the K/S motivation!

Am I right in thinking that this is really an alternate-universe post- Generations story, with Kirk and Spock changing things in the Nexus at the end of this story so that the Generations story we're familiar with replaces the one that generated "Finally"? If I've read that properly, what a wonderfully clever thing to do, the sort of twist that lifts any work by Kathy above the ordinary.

As surely we have all fantasized (at least once), Spock and Kirk are reunited in the Nexus and the sacrilege of Generations is undone. (He is not dead! He is not! There, I feel better...)

This story is quite hot -- at least I found it so. Kirk is in a state of at least partial arousal through most of it, and that can't be a bad thing. Also, Kirk and Spock romping in a pool is very nice. Best of all, when they do finally put me out of my misery (I was almost squirming in my chair for them to touch each other for most of the story) there's this really cool thing where Kirk envisions himself simultaneously in several different places at once, making love to Spock in all of them. Whew! Especially loved the thought of them on the Bridge, of course. Yum.

Sigh. I still think that even a really good writer can stumble when trying to make sense out of the Nexus, and I think a bit of that happened here. Though Kirk and Spock talk about what this Nexus thing is, and how it works, I only got more confused. (Believe me, I know how hard it is to explain this thing.) Also, I felt like if the author was going to use the Nexus as she did, providing this fantasy setting for the boys, then I really wanted to see it used to advantage. The glimpse of them making love on the Bridge was great. I found myself wanting more of that sort of thing. If we've got the ultimate fantasy toy, let's play!

A couple of questions I had... it kind of bothered me that the author kept giving me the impression that these new feelings the guys were having were no surprise to either of them. In fact, they'd kissed on the mouth more than once over the years. So why on earth didn't they ever get around to doing anything about this before? I didn't quite get that. Also, I don't want to give away the ending (which I thought quite clever) but Kirk displays what seems (to me) to be an out of character lack of concern for two officers under his command.

Some great lines in this story that really stayed with me:

"Indeed it is," Spock replied. He might as well have said 'suck my cock' for the heat in his voice."(as I hyperventilate a little) "He wanted to be inside Spock, wanted Spock inside him. He knew Spock knew this." (be still my heart!)

This story perplexed me a bit... I wasn't sure exactly what it was about, nor why the author made some of the choices she did. I wanted to know why they'd never done anything about these feelings before. I wanted to know how this interlude fit into the Generations timeline. But I have to admit, I found the naughty bits rather satisfying in spite of my general puzzlement.

2005

Finally – the Nexus provides an answer rather than a bevy of questions. Well, to be honest, lots of questions remain while reading this, but somehow they don’t seem as important as they used to because Spock has found Kirk.

The author answers why Kirk says “Oh my...” as he apparently dies after his encounter with Soran in Generations. I have always believed this means he sees Spock after being separated him for an untold amount of time in the temporal anomaly. It seems Ms. Stanis agrees with me. This is a most confusing situation to address – I could never imagine how to explain it even to myself. She does a darned good job!

Kirk’s uncertainty is predictable and has just the right intensity – enough to confuse him but not enough to detract him from the Vulcan who has suddenly and inexplicably joined him in his world. But exactly where is this world? The Nexus? Reality? Is Spock real or an illusion? For that matter, Kirk wonders, is he also no more than an echo of himself? He asks Spock if they need to eat or drink in this place. For once Spock has no definitive scientific answer, but a very practical one. I was very impressed with the way this author managed to never quite assure the reader of what was authentic and what was not – this was effective because it manages to convey the nebulous quality of the entire situation.

What’s most important is that Kirk and Spock are together and knowing what it is like to be separated, they waste no time in expressing their love and appreciation for each other. They are mature men, confident even in the face of this tremulous existence. Very satisfactory conclusion to Generations!
