Gillian Anderson (born August 9, 1968 in Chicago, Illinois, USA) is an American-British stage, movie and television actor. Anderson gained popularity in the 1990s with her portrayal as Special Agent Dana Scully in The X-Files TV show and movies and as Bedelia Du Maurier in the Hannibal TV series. She is also DSI Stella Gibson the TV show The Fall.

After the end of the initial 9 years run of The X-Files TV series in 2002, Anderson moved to England. She starred in independent movies and BBC costume dramas like in a well received[7] 2005 BBC adaption of Bleak House, Great Expectations, The Crimson Petal and the White, Any Human Heart and War and Peace - mostly to distance herself from Hollywood type casting.

Together with Jeff Rovin she is the co-author of the three Earthend-Saga-books: A Vision of Fire, A Dream if Ice and The Sound of Seas.

In June 2016, it was officially announced that Anderson will re-team with Hannibal showrunner Bryan Fuller to play Media, one of the new gods in the upcoming TV adaptation of American Gods, which is based on the book with same name written by Neil Gaiman.[8] The first season premiered in April 2017.

Fannish Response

In the early 1990s, Anderson became an unexpected sex symbol and has been regularly voted "most attractive" and "World's sexiest woman" in polls. In 1996 she was named Sexiest Woman in the World by the British FHM magazine.

Anderson appeared at several "X-Files" conventions. In 1996, two appearances at Australian shopping malls caused a frenzy when over ten thousand fans wanted to see Anderson.[9]

She also appeared on several conventions in 1996, 1998 and 2011 to 2016.

Fan Activities

Anderson is an activist for several[10] charities and since the early 1990s encouraged her fans to help fund raising for causes like the Neurofibromatosis Network. (Neurofibromatosis is genetic disorder of the nervous system that Anderson's younger brother Aaron eventually died from in 2011.[11]) For example, fans would be holding so called "Scully Marathons" where fans would meet for example to watch TV episodes or movies with Anderson and donate money.[12]

Anderson also regularly auctions personal memorabilia from productions she has worked during panels at conventions[13] and on eBay and. All proceeds go to charity. Some Fanart artists also donated fan works to be auctioned for charity.

Anderson is also a supporter of the National Doodle Day and actively acquires Doodles from co-stars and people she meets.

A photo manipulation made by a fan depicting Anderson in James Bond movie poster style and posted by the actress on her official Twitter account[14] resulted in an massive echo in both online and offline media after Daniel Craig reportedly would not return to a fifth reprisal of the role.[15]

RPF

Gillian Anderson is primarily shipped with her X-Files co-star David Duchovny in X-Files RPF. In the usenet groups like Alt.tv.x-files this behaviour was usually being frowned on by X-Philes in 1990s (see Snogger), but since the 2000s with the arrival of new and younger fans this seems to become more mainstream.[16] These fans no longer consider themselves snoggers and tried to establish the name Gillovny for the pairing.

There is also some fan fiction shipping her with Hannibal co-star Mads Mikkelsen.
