Pokémon Diamond, Pearl and Platinum (commonly abbreviated as DPPt) are the sequels to the third games in the Pokémon franchise Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald. Released initially as Pocket Monsters Diamond and Pearl for the Nintendo DS on September 28, 2006 in Japan, it later received an updated version, Pocket Monsters Platinum, on September 13, 2008. Diamond and Pearl would release in America on April 22, 2007, with Platinum following on March 22, 2009.

The games were later remade for the Nintendo Switch in 2021 with Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon Shining Pearl. In 2022, the game Pokémon Legends: Arceus, which takes place in the 19th-century and features many of the ancestors of existing characters, heavily influenced the sub-fandom for DPPt, more-so than even the remakes.

Plot Overview

The player controls a protagonist that you name, (a young boy named Lucas or a girl named Dawn,) and explores a fictional interpretation of Hokkaido in Japan called Sinnoh. You start out with either Turtwig, Chimchar or Piplup, given to you by the region's Pokémon Professor. The other playable character acts as the professor's assistant. Your neighbor, the energetic Barry, is also your rival.

The games feature eight gym leaders, which must be defeated in Pokémon battles before you reach the Elite Four, considered the four strongest trainers in the region aside from the Pokémon Champion, Cynthia. Along the way, you encounter and defeat either the villainous energy corporation Team Galactic, led by Cyrus.

The 2021 remakes update the games' mechanics, appearance and post-game content. Unlike previous remakes in the series, it does not add a significant amount of content, instead serving mostly as a way to play the old games on the Nintendo Switch.

Characters

Dawn and Cynthia are considered the most popular characters to have come from these games within the fandom. Both make major appearances in the anime series, with Dawn being one of Ash Ketchum's traveling companions, replacing May, and Cynthia being the Sinnoh Pokémon Champion.

Repurposing the female protagonist to be Ash Ketchum's primary female traveling companion had happened before with May from Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald and would happen again with Serena from Pokémon X and Y. Many fans consider this Dawn, a Pokémon Coordinator, and the Dawn seen in the games, either the Pokémon Champion or the professor's assistant, to be cross-canon counterparts of the same character.

The games' Dawn, largely un-characterized by canon, may be a stand-in for the author in a fanwork, written with either her anime or Pokémon Special manga characterization, (as seen with Platinum Berlitz,) or, often, some combination of the three, if focused on. As of 2022, Akari's characterization in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, who is also a cross-canon counterpart of Dawn, has influenced her characterization, leading to her behaving more self-sufficiently, yet more isolated and full of angst. Many fans also believe them to be the same character, thus, their characterizations would be the same.

Cynthia is a mythologist with an interest an archeologist, having a polite demeanor, especially towards the protagonist. She wanders Sinnoh in hopes of learning more about its history.

Another popular character is Volkner, one of the gym leaders, who's somewhat of a breakout character and is often shipped with many of the other gym leaders, as well as Dawn and Lucas. Riley is in mostly the same boat, but to a smaller extent. Fans may describe them both as bishounen.

Other notable characters include the remaining gym leaders and Elite Four: Roark, Gardenia, Maylene, Crasher Wake, Fantina, Byron, Candice, Flint, Aaron, Lucian and Bertha. The admins of Team Galactic, Mars, Saturn and Jupiter also appear. Buck, Cheryl, Marley, Mira and Riley also assist the player, called Sinnoh Stat Trainers since their one Pokemon specializes in one of the five stats. The games also introduce Looker, an Interpol agent who later becomes a recurring character.
