Cyrus is the leader of Team Galactic from Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. Team Galactic is the fourth of many evil teams in the Pokémon series who aim to generally be evil. In Team Galactic's case, it is a piracy organization which steals Pokémon and wind energy in hopes of allowing Cyrus to recreate the world with the Legendary Pokémon Dialga and Palkia. Cyrus also makes appearances in Pokémon Masters, PokéAni, Pokéspe and Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, always as a villainous character.

Cyrus is a fan favorite, though not too many fanworks exist which primarily focus on him. He, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and Charon are often in fanworks together, as they are the five named Team Galactic members in the Pokémon games.

The Pokémon Cyrus is most associated with are Crobat, Weavile and Giratina.

Popular Tropes & Fanon

One popular headcanon is that Cyrus is Autistic or otherwise Neurodivergent-coded with a form of Alexithymia. He canonically has difficulty processing emotions and has obsessive tendencies, similar to that of "special interests" in Autistic people. He finds joy in working with machines and is generally introverted unless when around Team Galactic.

Cyrus can also be considered a Tumblr Sexyman[2].

Game Freak Leak

Cyrus being Autistic, a popular headcanon, became semi-canon in 2024. That October, Game Freak was hacked, called the Pokémon Teraleak within the fandom, and internal information about the development of the Pokémon games was released to the public. This included the internal character bio for Cyrus, which described him with "自閉的." 自閉 means socially withdrawn or self focused and 的 turns this to an adjective, so 自閉的 can translate to "tendency to be socially withdrawn and self focused" or "Autistic tendencies" depending on context. 自閉 is how "Autism" is written in Japanese, but it does not mean a diagnosis or even a reference to Autism.[3][4][5][Notes 1]

This information was revealed in a CentroLeaks post on Twitter, a well known Pokemon-centric leaker, stating boldly that "Cyrus is canonically autistic."[6]

A Twitter community note was attached to this post soon after it circulated, which said the phrase flat out does not mean Autism.[7] It was removed within a few days to a few hours, implying that it was false, or at least heavily contested.[8][9] Some fans took this as "自閉的" meaning a direct connection with Autism.[10]

Autism in Japanese culture is different than it is seen as in western cultures. Particularly, Asperger's Syndrome/Autism was associated with murderers and apathy in the early 2000s, and it's unlikely that the majority of Game Freak's staff did not know what it was during Diamond and Pearl's development or at least had never heard about it.[Notes 2] Directly associating a fictional character with a diagnosable disorder is seen as rude in Japan, however, making a direct admission, even in internal documents, unlikely[11] -- opposite to how it is in the west, where it often implies accountability and the idea that someone can be "truly be seen" in a fictional character.

For example, regarding Kamille Bidan in Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam describing himself as Autistic 「自閉症」 in 1985, this is seen as grossly misusing the word, because the writers only used it to describe his personality, so it's not considered canon.[12][13] The line is considered infamous. Similar to Cyrus, some in western circles also headcanon him as Autistic.[14]

Many western fans took the leak to mean Cyrus being Autistic as canon[15][16][17] or semi-canon.

How this was taken in Japan is largely unknown, though the information wasn't spread much due to it not being an official statement by Game Freak.
