Cody/Noah, also known as NoCo, is a popular pairing within Total Drama fandom. The ship is between Cody and Noah, both prominent characters. It has been popular since 2007, and is the only Slash ship in the Total Drama fandom to have this distinction.
Cody/Noah is Total Drama's second/third most fanwork'd ship on Archive of Our Own as of September 2023, neck-to-neck in popularity with Alejandro/Noah, the coupling of Alejandro and Noah. There is light ship war between Alejandro/Noah, Cody/Noah and Cody/Sierra fans, though Noah/Owen shippers are not to be ignored from the equation.
As of April 2024, over 700 works on Archive of Our Own are of Cody/Noah. On FanFiction.Net, over 134 fics under the Total Drama category have "NoCo" or "Nody" in their summaries.
Common Tropes
- in vino veritas - Kissing in your sleep edition.
- Domestic AU - Cody/Noah fanworks tend to be on the fluffy side.
- Fake Dating Turns Real - Mostly to ward off Sierra, however, works made prior to Total Drama: World Tour may have placed Eva in the same position[1].
- Izzy the Matchmaker - Other characters may propel the ship. Although typically Izzy is in this position, it may also be Gwen[2].
- Jealous!Noah - Early fanworks may have portrayed Noah as jealous of Gwen for being Cody's crush. After World Tour, it was more likely to be Sierra instead of Gwen.
Cody/Noah Fandom
Aipomtrainer[3][4] was a BNF for Cody/Noah back in the day and still occasionally posts about Cody/Noah.
Former BNFs include dinosauris--rex[5] and Zphal[6]. Modern BNFs include kimpuntoexe[7], zuureleena[8], eavee-ry[9] and starryluminary[10]. Eavee-ry is a BNF in Total Drama fandom as a whole.
Pairing Names for Cody/Noah
The portmaneau "Nody" was coined as a pairing name for them sometime before June 2009[11] and was the most commonly used and recognized ship name for them until 2011 or so, when "NoCo" surpassed it in usage. One fan wrote that NoCo was coined by someone, likely a BNF, in 2009[12]. As of 2024, the pairing is nearly universally recognized as NoCo, and Nody is rare. A similar change happened with Cody/Gwen's ship name "Gody" around the same time.
Cody/Noah, the Fujoshi's Favorite?
As a result of Fandom Migration, early Cody/Noah fanculture took heavy inspiration from larger Anime fandom. Calling the pairing yaoi, using anime bases, drawing chibis and making AMVs were commonplace for Cody/Noah fanworks, moreso than for any other Total Drama pairing.
After Sierra was introduced in World Tour, fans speculated she knew of Cody/Noah. Given how the ship is an entirely fanon pairing, and Sierra is a larger amalgamated parody of, "the super-obsessed fangirl," this was not a big leap of logic. Despite never referencing to Cody/Noah in-universe, fanworks may portray her as actively disliking the pairing and its fans.
The ship has been controversial since 2007 and continues to be so. Its popularity with Fujoshi, whether shippers call themselves that or otherwise, is often mentioned in discussion as a negative.
