Army Dreamers was an editing trend on TikTok which sections of the first verse and chorus of Army Dreamers by Kate Bush. Edits were focused on media with heavy themes, such as trauma or war, or media that was considered tragic. Fan edits typically used a cut of the song with these lyrics:

The trend began in early March, but was likely popularized in a video from March 18th by user @false.advertizing[note 1], who requested edits of Neon Genesis Evangelion characters to the song.[1] Some fandoms quickly latched onto the song, finding it 'fit' specific characters or groups particularly well, spawning a huge number of edits in a short amount of time.

Elements

Editors used the song to reflect the tragedy of certain characters, or an entire piece of media. Edits were centered on three characters, with clips of each arranged to a relevant two-line section of the chorus. Characters were from the same media, and usually had similar/the same in-canon traumas, especially at the hands of a powerful institution (e.g. the military). Following the themes of the song, they were typically teenage or young adult characters, or edits were focused specifically on that period of their lives.

Some edits focused on only one character, or an original character, though these were less common. Animatic style videos to the sound were also moderately popular.

The trend was particularly popular in the marauders fandom, with many fans commenting on how well the lyrics fit the characters Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, and James Potter respectively. Users expressed that their For You Pages were full of edits to the song, which were often extremely emotional for fans.

A variation on the editing trend quickly emerged, where fans represented the characters using objects (clothes, shoes, etc) associated with each. Many of these associations and symbols came from the community's widespread fanon, rather than from canon details.
