In February 2024, Universal Music Group (UMG) pulled their catalog from TikTok, after declining to renew a licensing agreement with the platform. Consequently, any videos using UMG music had their audio completely muted, leading users to refer to the event as a 'ban'.

Rather than simply replacing music, some videos leaned into the trend, like a Hannibal edit styled like a silent movie.[1]
