Young Guns is a 1988 Western film set in New Mexico in the late 1870s, which portrays the adventures of Billy the Kid during the Lincoln County War. It stars Emilio Estevez, Kiefer Sutherland, Lou Diamond Phillips and Dermot Mulroney, among other fannish BSOs.
It is part of the Kiefer/Lou fandom.
A sequel to the film, Young Guns II, was released in August 1990. In 2021, it was announced that a third installment, Guns 3: Alias Billy the Kid is in the works, with Estevez, Phillips, and Christian Slater (Arkansas Dave Rudabaugh in Young Guns II) reprising their roles.[1][2]
Canon
John Tunstall (Terence Stamp) is an English cattle rancher who hires wayward young men to work at his ranch, where he educates and mentors them. When Tunstall is murdered, they form a deputized posse called The Regulators to avenge him. However, newcomer William H. Bonney (Emilio Estevez)—aka Billy the Kid—vies for leadership and turns the group into outlaws.
The others members of the group are Josiah "Doc" Scurlock (Kiefer Sutherland), who writes poetry; Jose Chavez y Chavez (Lou Diamond Phillips), a Mexican-Navajo whose tribe was murdered; Dick Brewer (Charlie Sheen), the group's original leader; Dirty Steve Stephens (Dermot Mulroney); and Charlie Bowdre (Casey Siemaszko). Their friend and lawyer Alex McSween (Terry O'Quinn) assists the group.
Young Guns II picks up about a year after the group goes their separate ways and takes more creative license with historical events than its predecessor. Billy has formed a new gang and reunites with Doc and Chavez while the authorities try to arrest them and hire Billy's ex-ally Pat Garrett (William Petersen) to kill him.
