Excerpts
XFFFA- How long have you been writing X-Files Fanfiction?
MP- About two and a half years. Wow -- when I write it out, it looks like a long time. I probably should have more stories to show for it after this long, but I'm not a fast writer. I really envy those talented authors who are so wonderfully prolific.
XFFFA- What story, author or episode inspired you to write fanfiction?
MP- "12 Degrees of Separation" by Anne Haynes was the first story I read that made me realize fanfic didn't have to be just an amusing diversion, but instead could be as real and touching and engrossing as any published work I've ever purchased in a store. It's the one that made me want to write my own Mulder/Scully stories.
XFFFA- Did you write before the X-Files?
MP- I enjoyed one other fandom years ago in high school. It was a British show, Robin of Sherwood, which starred Michael Praed (and later Jason Connery) as the title character. I co-wrote a few original, humorous stories based upon that show, but that was before the internet was widely available, and the stories were published in fanzines only. They were completely different from anything I've written about the X-Files. I did, however, have the lovely experience of receiving a letter from the show's creator, producer, and sometimes-writer Kip Carpenter, who told me he had read two of the stories and had never laughed so hard in his life -- he loved them. I still have that letter, and I'm still amazed by it. Somehow I can't quite imagine Chris Carter writing to a fanfic author and telling them how much he enjoyed their story...although maybe he has. You never know. : )
XFFFA- How did you find fanfiction on the net?
MP- When I first got online, I just went surfing for XF related pages. Little did I know what I was in for. : ) It was like the heavens opened up and deposited endless, free entertainment at my fingertips. My sleep habits have never recovered.
XFFFA- If you could be any character in the show who would you be and why?
MP- Now HERE'S a fun question. I think I'd most like to be Maggie Scully, so I could sit my daughter down firmly and tell her she's not getting any younger and she has a gorgeous partner who is obviously in love with her whom she obviously loves in return, so stop beating around the bush and make a *move* already. Then I would go to visit Mulder and sit him down just as firmly and ask him in no uncertain terms why the hell he's not having sex with my beautiful, smart, sexy, single daughter who loves him and whom he is obviously crazy about. Only a mother can get away with these things. I'd love to give it a shot.
