Excerpts
(XFFFA) What was the first X-file Episode you watched?
(D) The Pilot - yep, I'm one of those who has watched from the beginning. I did watch sporadically at first, more due to scheduling conflicts than lack of interest, but when they did the summer repeat that first year, I got totally hooked and reworked my schedule to accommodate the show. Yeah, yeah, I know -- we're not obsessed, we're *focused!*
(XFFFA) When did you first get online to check out the X-files newsgroups or websites?
(D) I got my computer for Mother's Day in '96, but didn't get online until almost a year later. I didn't find fanfiction until summer of '97, and then I was reading all the Star Trek sites! I stumbled on the X-Files stuff in August and never went back. (Sorry, Spock!) I have no idea why I didn't make the connection that if there was Star Trek stuff, there was bound to be others. One of my more embarrassing oversights, I must admit. It took even longer before I found the newsgroups and then I spent a good bit of time at ATXF as well as ATXC. I finally settled in ATXC and have been there ever since, reading and writing to my heart's content.
(XFFFA) Did you have a special site that you visited often?
(D) I think I found Gossamer through a Yahoo search, and, man, I thought I'd won the lottery or something. I was addicted! I couldn't believe the quality of so much of the writing, and all for *free!* I checked out the links to other sites from there and quickly made MTA my second home as well. At the time, the Soulmates Eternal archive was also a very functional archive. I hung on both of them because the archivists updated so frequently and there was always something new to read. I miss Soulmates.
(XFFFA) How did you discover X-files fanfiction?
(D) Through that Yahoo search. I worked through the entire Gossamer archive. I started with the As in the author file (I figured I'd do authors not titles. That way, if I found something I really liked, I could read the rest of the author's work while I was there!) and just read everything. I was really unsure of what all these pleas for feedback were (NOW I understand!) and also more uncertain of being too *loud* on the 'net, so I kept a low profile and just read and read and read! I continued to work through Gossamer, and hit MTA and Soulmates almost daily as well.
(XFFFA) Did you read anyone else's fanfiction that inspired you yourself to write? If so, do you remember who it was or the title of it?
(D) Oh, this one is easy! I had reached the Ls on Gossamer, and came to Jo-Ann Lassiter Her story, "Looks and Smiles," was exactly what I had been looking for. In case you haven't picked up on it, I'm a 'shipper and I like the hurt/comfort type story, but I also was fascinated by the Skinner character. Her story combined enough of all three that I just thought I'd died and gone to heaven! I had this idea in my head, an image really, after I read that story, that just wouldn't go away. I could *see* Scully standing in a rainy field, holding an umbrella over Mulder while he worked a crime scene. That one little image turned into a whole series - "Profiles in Caring." And I have to bow and say, it was Jo-Ann's work that made me want to put it on paper and share it.
(XFFFA) What was the feedback like on your first stories? Did it inspire you to write more?
(D) Feedback on my first story was nonexistent, but I still didn't really understand the whole feedback concept at that point. I was just reading, and reading, and reading, and had decided to try my own hand at writing. I did "TDATL," posted it, never heard a word, and never thought about it. By then I was working on Profiles, and I was so caught up in the story I was writing, I stopped reading fanfic, stopped cruising the newsgroups. I didn't do anything but write for about three weeks. I posted that one, and THEN I understood all about feedback! Man, did I have guilt then! All those wonderful stories I had read and never written to anyone about. I immediately became *very* good about writing when I read something I liked. I really should apologize to all those authors in the A - L section that I never did go back and write to ...
(XFFFA) How do you feel about season six so far? How would you like to see the show end?
(D) Aside from the abysmal opening ep, (though I was so pleased to hear Scully call Gibson sweetie! I had Scully call Mulder "sweetie" in my story Memory, and several people wrote and told me she would never say that! So I felt quite vindicated!) the rest of the season is shaping up quite nicely. For a while there,I wondered if CC was going to tell us in the last ep that the whole season had been a dream (Triangle, Dreamland, Ghosts),but there seemed to be some reality in the Skinner ep. Despite DD's childlike petulance in forcing the move, it seems to have been beneficial. I think his acting is first-rate this year. I'm much more into the MOTW eps, so I've been in heaven thus far. The whole damn mytharc has gotten so convoluted, it is almost impossible to follow as far as I can see. And CC's cute little comments about not knowing if what we learned in the movie was truth or lie did nothing to whet my appetite for the myth -- it just frustrates me.
As for how the show ends - I do hope we at least manage to spawn a movie franchise a la Star Trek, so that it really doesn't have to end. But I would like to see some resolution of things. I don't really care all that much about what happened to Samantha, but I would like to know what DaddyMulder did and how CSM is connected to the family. The Jeremiah Smith healer line intrigues me. And I really want this new Skinner plotline resolved. Poor guy -- he finally realizes he's got to take a stand and be more proactive, and they've got him by the nanos. I want to see how that plays out. I'm hoping there will be *some* progression of a personal relationship for Mulder and Scully; I don't think it would ruin anything. And as far as their feelings getting in the way of work, I don't work with anyone who would chase *me* to Antarctica if I disappeared.
