Early Life

Briar was born in 1994 and was an avid book reader as they grew up in the early and mid 2000s, which would later inspire their username on several sites ‘lapsed-bookworm’. While they enjoyed imagining different endings to books and thinking of various ‘what if’ scenarios for such series as Guardians of Ga’Hoole, some of Animorphs, Artemis Fowl, many Stephen King books, and the Pendragon series, they would not engage with fandom until sometime around 2005 when they began to read fanfiction for the Harry Potter series and interact with other fans. Examples of sites visited during this time include, but are not limited to: The Sugar Quill (fanfic), FictionAlley (mainly fanfic), MuggleNet (mainly news), The Quidditch Pitch (fanfic), and The Restricted Section (fanfic).

Briar began writing fanfiction for the Harry Potter series around 2005 to 2007, but most of it was handwritten in notebooks and shared with friends instead of being posted online. A few fics were lost from personal (connected to offline identity) LiveJournal and deviantART accounts sometime between 2012 and 2021, but their FanFiction.Net account started around 2008 has been left alone to preserve the sheer 2009 atmosphere of the profile page. They also began to beta for their friends and engage with several other fandoms from 2008 through 2012, including some of Avatar: The Last Airbender, Black Butler, and Death Note.

Undergrad (2012 to 2016)

Briar lost touch with certain tv shows they primarily watched with their family and found new canon to engage with via tumblr (gifsets, fics, fanart, etc.) in a time of more fanwork intake than fanwork creation. While they still returned to FanFiction.Net for certain fandoms, they were introduced to Archive Of Our Own for the first time. Fandoms from around this time include: Being Human (US), Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Criminal Minds, Doctor Who (Ninth and Tenth Doctors), Merlin (BBC), My Mad Fat Diary, NCIS, Person of Interest, Pushing Daisies, Sherlock (BBC) season 1, the start of Supernatural (season 1), and some of Welcome to Night Vale.

Post-Undergrad (2016 to 2020)

The immediate years following Briar’s undergraduate studies are nebulous, but fandom engagement did start back up again with the creation of their AO3 account in 2017. They returned to either reading or writing fanfiction from earlier fandoms, such as Criminal Minds, Harry Potter, and NCIS. However, due to a change in their tinnitus (that first appeared in the summer of 2011), they have struggled with keeping engaged in podcasts, taking part in podfic, or keeping up with fandom related podcasts like Harry Potter and the Sacred Text.

They also returned to watching certain tv shows with their family, which includes: Bull (seasons 1 through 4), Charmed (2018), Criminal Minds, Evil (TV series), Incorporated, NCIS, Prodigal Son (TV series), Pose (TV series), Project Blue Book, Reverie (TV series), Roswell, New Mexico, Scorpion (TV series) (seasons 3 and 4), Siren (TV series), the entirety of Supernatural (joining in weekly airing starting with season 12 in fall of 2016 through the end of season 15 in 2020), S.W.A.T. (2017), and The Exorcist (TV series).
